Middlesex - Not quite enough

Suddenly the Saviour
By Grockle
May 31 2004
The game against Middlesex assumes huge proportions as an indicator of the fortunes of an entire county cricket setup. Either we show we are not prepared to become a bunch of losers or the whole season will be tarnished by the 95 all out massacre at New Road on Saturday.

v Middlesex @ Lords TS2 31 May 2004

Somerset ironically arrive at Lords, the home of cricket (allegedly) after the awful result in the C&G.  They will either leave the ground with their tails firmly, and probably permanentaly between their legs, or with their heads held high, broken but unbowed.  I hope to see the latter, win or lose, but I've been here before and have seen the former too many times from this talented bunch of under-performers.  It really is a very very important day for Somerset cricket and I hope that the playing staff and those who work behind the scenes realise how much we expect from the squad set to play today.

We lose Marcus Trescothick who returns to the quieter role of preparing to meet New Zealand in the second Test.  It is highly unlikely that we will see him again in an SCCC shirt this year.  Richard Johnson also misses out on the fray with an elbow and knee niggle.  He may very well spend some time in the seconds before he gets the chance to get amongst the wickets again.  That is if James Hildreth and Simmon Francis get their way.  Other than those enforced changes, the coach and club have put the job of putting the side back on the road in the hands of the players who failed so miserably on Saturday at Worcester...quite right too!

Middlesex are stronger than most of the opposition we have faced thus far and we were hammered by Yorkshire who are probably the closest to them.  We need to up it a gear or two.  They will want to rub the noses of their own ex-players in the poor performances of their new club.  We have to get our house in order and show them what we can really do and why players moved to the South West.  It won't be easy but who said putting your ability up on show was!  Get it done boys and bring some faith back to us!

Well we didn't win, but we didn't lose horrendously either.  249 in our 45 - Middlesex got there in 43.4 but they only lost 4 wickets.  Was the run out of Ian Blackwell significant in the 60's?  How much did we miss the runs of Jamie Cox as he failed to score?  What was the bowling like?  Analysis of the reports a little later but if anyone was there let us know on the messageboards and we'll patch it into here.
