Definite
v Durham @ Stockton CC2 6 May 2005
Well we're both going there after one day defeats! Durham lost to Derbyshire today but their Championship form is much better and it comes from their bowlers which is a problem for us! The matches of the last week have created some headaches for our new first team coach but he has nailed one flag to the post. Simon Francis will play and Nixon McLean won't.
The rumours are that Fletcher has decided that Marcus Trescothick needs another game to bolster his early season form. He will probably open with John Francis, taking into account Sanath's poor form on anything cold and damp. SJ should come in at 3. We really then have to expect Matt Wood to come in at 4 after Burns was dropped for the one day C&G match. If he isn't used tomorrow then we have to ask when he is expected to get a game. Burnsy needs at least one game out of the spotlight to work on his form.
Assuming that the next 4 are what one would expect. James Hildreth, Ian Blackwell, Aaron Laraman and Rob Turner. Then 9 10 and 11 have to be the men who came out of Grace Road with their heads held high. Richard Johnson, Simon Francis and Andy Caddick.
I'm off to Devon for the weekend so you'll have to talk among yourselves about this one. It is a pivotal match in our Championship season. It's against one of the front runners at the moment and if we take nothing away from this one we will be playing catch up all through the summer.
Day 1
Thanks to Jon and "Down by the Riverside" for the reports
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
So there you go ladies and gentlemen. Somerset fall to their third defeat out of 16. Durham rise with their 100% record. Our failure in CC2 in 2004 started with the Durham game. Reality starts here for this year's squad. Lancashire is 25% through the campaign. We start to win or we are herre for another season and that will be an unacceptable result at the next AGM.
Thanks to the Durham website boys for the updates...much appreciated. We'll try and make you work when you come to us in July boys!
Despite the best efforts of the 'has been' (why did we extend his contract?) Andy Caddick - 73 with the bat and 12 for 204 with the ball - it wasn't enough. It wasn't enough because except for Blackwell and Hildreth there was no consistency. John Francis in one innings and Mike Burns in another, just isn't enough. The bowlers didn't back up their lanky mate and the batsmen? 64 from 6 batsmen in the first innings? 72 in the second...it just isn't good enough.
Another positive end of match report from Mark G but it gets a bit hollow when nothing changes
We have a batting line-up with 9 batsmen with first class hundreds. 6 with first class doubles. Only one batsman hasn't made a first class 50. There are major problems in our camp and we seem incapable of dealing with it. I'm writing the same things over and over again guys...sort it out!!
