DOMINIC Cork fired Lancashire Lightning over the finishing line on Wednesday evening, by notching up the winning runs in the Natwest Pro40 Division One clash with Northants Steelbacks. Lancashire began to crumble under the consistant Northants pressure, and lost five wickets for just 54 runs, which left Steelbacks' fans licking their lips at the prospect of beating the Lightning, but Cork made sure they left with dry lips. Cork faced a total of two balls, off which he hit 10 runs, nine of which won the match. The all-rounded came to the crease Man of the match Stuart Law, hit 89 to send Lancs on the way to a great start of 124-0, but when he was caught by Brown off the bowling of Logan, Lightning started to crumble. Brad Hodge and Cross both fell in the same over off the bowling of Wakely. Both only managing a single run between them. Sutton was run out soon after leaving Croft and Cork at the crease to finish it off. Hodge picked up the first wicket of the rain effected game, which saw both teams only face 32 overs. Hodge bowling Peters for 54, before hero Cork took the wicket of Rogers. Glen Chapple got in to the action bowling Sales. Sajid Mahmod made a great return from his hernia operation, as he firstly ran out Rob White before bowling Riki Wessels. It was Wessels who hit the ball straight back at Mahmood, who kicked the ball on to the stumps to effectively end White's night. Talking about hitting the ball straight back at the bowler, it brings the name Muttiah Muralitharan to mind. Wessels tapped the ball back to Muralitharan, who misjudged the speed to the ball and dropped it at a second attempt. |
