2008 Starting XI Prediction Competition Entries

Will he be there?
By Ged February 17 2008
Ged announces the runners and riders in this year's starting XI prediction competition. Starting XI is the game and indeed eleven miscellaneous characters have had a go at the competition. No two entries are the same andthere are some interesting choices. Which tells us that the management have some interesting choices to make ahead of April 16th. Read on.

Eleven intrepid souls have had a go at the starting eleven competition:

Ged Ladd

Top Tier Pavillion

The Veteran

Comebackgatt

JSRF

Martyn

Hippity

Barmy Kev

The Diamond Ruled OK

Auntie Janet

Pistol Pete

And a pretty impressive eleven of pundits that is.  Every single one of them has gone for a subtly different starting XI.  Only three names appear across the board (Smith, Shah and Joyce).  Most people opt for Strauss and Godleman as openers, but some opt for Compton in place of one or other of those two.  The number 6 position is much up for debate, as are all of the bowling slots.

Go see for yourselves - the spreadsheet is published on the following link:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwWi9CpG2dshFIpfH8IB_Zw

Ged the tipster says that it could be anyone's game.  Perhaps someone wants to suggest the odds on each entry and we can get some derivative markets going on who is going to win this fascinating contest.

Up for grabs is far more than the miniscule prize.  We're talking pride with a capital P here.

I would suggest that only Ged has the possibility of being all correct, and then only marginally.
All of the other entries I would dismiss as extremely unlikely.

I rreally found this difficult. Especially bowling wise. We have 7 quality bowlers to choose and 3 maybe disappointed.

And that no. 6 slot?

If you only select four of them including a spinner, for a four day match Kev,and exclude Richardson and Silverwood, plenty of others are going to be dissapointed too.

I'll be very surprised if anyone gets the full eleven and think that several people might get 10, thus it is likely to come down to the positions as well as the team members.

On reviewing the list, I think Auntie Janet is in with a good shout, with Hippity and Martyn also making sound contributions.

In fact, apart from one or two "bold" selections, I think more or less anyone is in with a shout.

thanks for entry DCM.

You have missed the deadline by a week.

Also one of the spinners will be in India and the other we wish was.

Otherwise good effort.

Yes of course DCM,you were never included,by the way they're calling for your return on Grockles, apparently all is forgiven and they'd rather read you than me.
Pop over and check 'em out.

You are of course always welcome here, DCM, but the game did close 15 February, as clearly stated on the game page.

The whole point of the prediction game is to pick a date some way ahead of the season, so that all entrants are subject to the same risk that events overtake their carefully selected choices.

Last year we picked 31 December preceding the season. This year we picked the date 2 calendar months ahead of the season.

I have no problem with people continuing to choose teams and posting them on this thread, as long as those people know that they are merely playing for fun; the list of entrants and their selections for this game is now fixed.

Okay, can you include me in the scoring then please Ged?

If I win, which I probably will, it won't count.
Just for fun.

SM: My team
Strauss
Godleman
Shah
Smith
Joyce
Nash
Noffke
Murtagh
Udal
Silverwood
Richardson.

This of course assumes Strauss/Shah available. My two batting reserves ( if not ) being Compo and Morgs.

The starting eleven competition is reaching its denouement.

Of the eleven entries that came in on time, four are tied on 9 out of 11, thus it comes down to batting order to determine the winner.

Bad luck to all the others, who all got 7 or 8 out of 11.

Ged Ladd, Top Tier Pavillion, Martyn and Pistol Pete are the four who are still in it. Pistol Pete is currently in pole position, being the only one of us to have got the top 6 completely right. TTF, who anticipated Compton opening, is almost certainly out of contention now. Assuming Nash comes in at 7, both Ged and Martyn are only one position awry, which leaves the thing tantalisingly still open.

Here's a link to the spreadsheet again, updated to show the four who are still in it side by side:

Starting Eleven Prediction Game

Interesting to note that, despite the derision heaped upon DCM, his (albeit late) entry was close to the top contenders - 8 out of 11 with the top 6 spot on. Seaxe Man's late punt for fun was right up there with 9 out of 11.

Thought I'd republished, apologies:

Starting Eleven Update

And as returning officer for this constituency, I declare Pistol Pete the winner as he was spot on with his placements for the 9 out of 11 that he got right.

However, in true Zimbabwe style there might be a recount and several weeks before your win is confirmed.

Joking apart - send us your address details, PP and we'lls end you your prize. I just hope the post does better by you than it did for Dingy Bags last autumn.

I did do well.

If only I'd gone Udal for Kartik and Finn for Peplow.
