Middlesex at Disgraced Road

Journey Home
By Barmy Paul April 18 2008
Barmy Paul braved the elements and reports on an absolutely dire day for Middlesex. Bad batting, bad bowling, bad fielding in the freezing cold to set the tone for the season. Perhaps it is not a good idea to ask him whether he had a good day. This report carries a MTWD health warning

Bad Morning

I had high hopes for a big innings from our legend Knocker, but before I had properly settled at my seat he was out for 0. Joyce then was bowled with the leg stump flying out of the ground for playing down the wrong line, he made a scratchy 18. I was updating Barmy Kev by text. Hopes Murts can rescue matters, but was out for given lbw high up on the pad which looked very dubious decision he went for 8. At this stage realised it may be bad decision to continue to text Kev with matters going wrong for us as only have 100 free texts per day. Shaggy was next out bowled by Malik with middle stump out of the ground going for 1. Silvers made a good 21 while bringing up 300 to give me something to cheer about at last. Finn batted pretty well, especially as I thought he could not bat one bit last year. To summarise we should have got a lot more than we had, but the wicket was doing something with the conditions been helpful overhead, hopefully to assist our bowlers.

Silvers opens the bowling but straight away gets crashed through the covers for four. Compton then throws stupidly throws at stumps and the ball goes 4 over throws, which didn’t help as Leicester were already rallying along at 6 an over. At lunch Leicester are 41 – 0 which concluded a really bad session for Middlesex.

 Bad Early Afternoon

21 overs gone and Middx revert to a bit on spin with Shaggy after Silvers, Murts and Finn failed to break through. Finn did look really good and showed some promise. New gave a thick edge to Strauss who dose not makes much of an effort 2 catch it and it runs away for four. Leicester at 61 -0. Shaggy and Finn making a good combination keeping run rate down, but then Finn hobbles off with cramp, which brings Adam London to the field. At this stage Leicester are dominating and looking at ease. Middx attack looks tired and lacks a spark. So far not a good day for the Middx and no sign of improvement. Boyce brings up 50 off Murts with a great clip through leg side. Leicester 103 – 0 New brings up his 50 with a clip past mid on off Shaggy, who is not having the best of days!! Leicester continue to cruise, the Middx bowlers have no answer; we are now thinking should we have gone with 5 bowlers? Maybe a topic for the message board? Both New and Boyce look set for a century, having been in no danger making us look very average at best. Tea was called and Leicester are 136-0.

Bad late afternoon

3rd session was about to start but had to wait 5 minutes for Murts and Finn to appear making our over rate even worse! Early in session a WICKET at last, Boyce out for 69 played on, well deserved wicket for Finn!! This brought High Definition Ackerman to the crease, who wasted no time in playing his shots! HD brings up is 50 with a beauty cover drive his 50 was a pleasure to watch, having given up on any decent Middx performances. Leicester bring up their 200 after 68 overs and Barmy Kev texts me asking me to report on any chants or amusing incidents. Sadly I could not offer either on a grim day. New brings up his hundred with a glance for four and leaps for joy a really good innings another one for the future. Ace finally comes on to bowl, with a big cheer for the hardcore Middx fans, who stayed right to the end!!

Bad Day

Overall a really bad day for Middx. We looked a lot like last season, lacked ideas, very dull and struggling with four bowlers. Only consolation it can’t be any worse tomorrow, can it?

Despite Loverboy's feelings that this was harsh, of course without being there difficult to say, if I witnessed us losing 5 quickets wickets, then 80+ overs to take 1 on a cold day I would find it very difficult to find positives.

Thanks Paul for sharing your experience , albeit not the highlight of your life.

Looks like it's been big ups with the finger all day, especially once Middlesex started batting again.

Spoke to Paul on fast train back to London, while he was thawing out.

If he recovers from frost bite will type another report for tomorrow.

Loverboy has an interesting, another perspective of our showing and the contrasting report should make fascinating reading.

A brave effort by our lads, but in the end it was too little too late.
About 300 hardy souls gathered for what looked likely to be a short day,250 of them chose to stay behind glass, and Mr Whippy failed to show.
An inauspicious start saw Ace depart immediately after completing his 50.Murts dropped on one took advantage of his good fortune to play pleasantly off his legs and reach an atractive 30 odd,but when he and Knocker fell close together the writing appeared to be on the wall.
There followed the best batting of the day,as the tail wagged even more vigourosly led by the shaggiest dog of all.
Sean Udal on debut used his long reach to much effect,as he took the attack to the bowlers, ably assisted by the stylish Woody,84 were added in quick time before the innings ended.
166 in 61 was not whatt Leicester had in mind at the start of the day,and adopted a cautious approach. When Woody struck two early blows, dismissing New and the dangerous Ackerman, and then the hapless Du Twit lobbed a simple catch to mid-on it was turning into ''The Woody and Shaggy Show''and hopes rose in Middlesex hearts.Alas it was not to be as the enterprising Allenby and the adhesive Boyce gradually took control, the scoring rate increased and in the end we were well beaten, but at least a full day's play and a performance from the lower order that promises much for the future.
The lack of an extra bowler and no sign of form and confidence from the batters excluding Ace proved descisive
in the end.

Thanks Loverboy. Sums up the day well: Daisy and I heard a fair bit on the Internet Radio and at one point it looked like a last over of the day finish with all five results still possible was still in the offing.

At lunch and at 36/3 our hopes were lifted.

But the Middlesex batting collapses in both innings proved to be our undoing and Leics surely deserved their win on balance.

We heard Middlesex miss three run-out opportunities, at least 2 of which were at stages when the game might really have swung our way had they hit. Other than that, the ear-witness report accords with the eye witness report more or less exactly. A numbing start to the season.
