Utterly Uxbridge - Middx v Warws Day One

Richo is back!!
By Seaxe Man July 16 2008
Seaxe Man tells us how it was at Uxbridge on Day One against Warwickshire. A day of three halves by the sound of it. And one major partnership. And "on the verge" weather. If you want the frippery and embellishment, look elsewhere; Seaxe Man tells it straight. Many thanks to Seaxe Man for this report.

Arrived in Gatting Way at 10.15. Weather allegedly, sunny periods and cloud: this turned out to be the best Uxbridge murk without much heat.

Note of interest: copped a new ground yesterday in 2nd eleven match at St Paul's Sch in Barnes where we defeated Notts in an SET match. There is to be a further 3 day match v Lanky  on 6/7/8 August  SEC. Alistair Fraser is the School Coach.

TEAMS

MIDDLESEX - Compton, Malan, Shah, Joyce*, Morgan, Scott, Murtagh, Evans, Kartik, Richo, Finn.

WARWICK - Maddy*, Poonia, Powell, Trott, Troughton, Frost, Botha, Carter, Woakes, Salisbury, Martin.

TOSS: Warwick won toss and batted.

1st session

Murts opened the bowling @ the Pavilion End. Richo from the Gatting Way End. Strong lbw appeal from Murts in 3rd over. The 5th over produced a wicket for Murts, Maddy going for 13. (18 for 1). At over 14, there was double change with Finn and Evans replacing the aforementioned. This worked as Powell was taken at slip by Joyce off Evans for 11 (40 for 2) Kartik came on at GWE @ 12.45. Finn then had Poonia taken behind by Scott (71 for 3). Poonia 28. The next ball was crunched for 4. The 4th wicket fell at 78 when a bouncy delivery from the 6'8" Finn took the edge of Trott's bat for 16 on the stroke of lunch. Lunch score 78 for 4.  Midd-x's session.

2nd session

Resumed: Richo GWE/Finn Pav. 100 came up in 37th over. So oppo were not exactly running away with it. Compton made several excellent stops in the covers to back up tidy bowling. A drive for 3 past coverpoint by Frost brought up the 50 partnership. This had followed a period of stoic defence by the batters as they sought steady the ship after losing 4 wickets in the first session. Middx rang the bowling changes but were unable to dislodge either batsmen. Steve Finn continued to look our most menacing bowler and looks to have upped his pace. The home side fielded well.  Kartik from the Pav End produced a half chance from Troughton. Tea 159 for 4. Warwick matched stoic defence with occasional aggressive strokes. Warwicks session.

3rd session

Troughton brought up his 50 with a couple of pulls through midwicket for 4 off Richo (106 b 6 fours ). The 100 partnership with Frost soon followed in the 68th over. Frost's own 50 then came up bizarrely with 4 overthrows. Malan came on with the score at 200 for 4 from 73 overs. He took a bit of stick from Frost with a brace of fours. As a distraction, we had a visit from Gerry, assuring all that he really is a WUM. New ball then taken by Murts and Richo. The 150 partnership came up in the 83rd over. The partnership came to an end shortly after, when Richo produced a quick ball which kept a touch low to clean bowl Frost for 84. (235 for 5). A good spell by Richo. Kartik bowled the last over. Close Warwickshire 271 for 5.

Summation

The cricket was a bit like the weather. Promising at times but like the sun never quite came out. However, Middlesex's out cricket was good enough to restrict Warwick to a rate of under 3 an over: so credit to them for that. We did not bowl too many balls which said hit me. Warwick upped the pace a bit in the 3rd session but we contained them reasonably well. A fairly even day. Game at present evenly poised.
