suffering defeat
Despite the fact that there might only be an hours or so play, I could not resist the chance to miss us clinching our third CC win of the season and putting Worcester’s promotion party on hold. I set off from Chipping Camden in good time arriving at the ground at 10.15. Free entry, as one would expect, somewhat sparse crowd, in fact once the players and umpires were out I speculated that there were more on the field than off. It has been a shock to home fans who expected their heroes to go up in style.
Strauss and Billy the Kid walked out with just 67 runs to get. How would we approach this I thought, well the answer was “not to hang around”. Mr Fernando helped the cause by looking either ...1. Out of sorts or...2. not interested., bowling three no balls in his couple of overs. Andy and Billy put on 31 in about half an hour, before the Kid was trapped in front from a rare straight delivery from Fernando. The arrival of Ace signalled the rush to victory. He hit five fours in a quckfire 22 before, with just two to win, he lofted Whelan to Andrew. The Capt. came in and blocked five balls, before, with the first ball of the next over, Straussie hit the winning runs to finish 28 not out including 5 x 4s. Gareth Andrew, who took five wickets in Middx first innings, conceded 7 runs from his 7 deliveries, including one of the widest wides I’ve ever seen.
So it was all over in under an hour, 20 points in the bag. That should mean we cannot finish lower than sixth, higher if we get a good result against Northampton. As for Worcester that will have to wait a bit longer.
However, as I write this Essex have failed to get their third bowling point, which means they can only get 195, so Worcestershire are promoted, but will have to wait a week to see if Warwickshire pip them to the title.
