8 wickets but no victory
Although the weather forecast was not great, I decided to go for it anyway. Needed to leave early so my little dog got her walk along Broadstairs Prom. a bit earlier than usual. She didn’t look too keen to go out when she normally likes to lie in but was fine once out. Woofed down breakfast (wait for laughter) and set off for the A2 into Town. In the company of Simon Bates I thought the clouds were breaking but by the time I reached the Dartford Tunnel I was wondering whether I had made the right choice.
Reached the ground at10.45, with no immediate prospects of play, so wandered into the town centre for a coffee and a sticky bun. Still miserable so wandered down to the Chelmsford Civic theatre to meet up with an old mate who is in charge and had a spot of lunch. To my delight I find Elkie Brooks is performing there in a couple of weeks, so book my tickets. Quick call to ground to find play will start at 3.00.
On arrival the players were taking the field, very sparse crowd and although Shaggy led the boys out looking up for the battle one felt our chances had been washed away. Finny and Woody opened the bowled but there was fairly early success when Matt Walker nicked to Knocker to give young Finn his eighth wicket of the match. Only seven to go!!! However Cook looked in cracking form and he and Pettini got after young Finny a bit, Cook lofting him for a huge six. On Pettini’s dismissal leg before to TSO for 21 I debated whether to call it a day, but decided to stick it out (oh missus!!), avoid some the traffic although by now I wish I was wearing my winter warmers .
Wondering whether we would see Malan and even Nashie turn their arms over before we were all put out of our misery. Eventually everyone got bored and it was called off at 159-4 with Cook unbeaten on84. All we can do is reflect on what might have been but for the rain and take some comfort that we outplayed Essex and hope we can carry it on for the rest of the season. At least all the other games were draws so we haven’t lost any ground. Dartford tunnel here I come.
