Even More Ackermanned Off

Surrey fans everywhere

Roe Ed reports on a mainly depressing day for Middlesex with some hope at the end.

My annual away trip to watch the mighty Middlesex is always interesting. Last year at Southport I was entertained by a crooner in a dinner jacket, this year on offer close to my B&B were sauna/ massage and methadone!  Is this a comment on Division 2 cricket?

Finn opened up and his second ball was comfortably driven for four by their No.10 Griffiths. His second over produced three edges which didn't carry to slip. Low bounce?
Murts had started at the far end and got variable bounce but the batsmen were rarely troubled and showed no urgency in trying to reach 400 before the cut off for batting points.
An early point of interest was that the scoreboards  were often not in sync but when corrected it gave the MTWD group something to cheer.
Harris replaced Murts at 11.45 and also got some lift into the batsmen. Then Ravi came on to sound of the ice cream shop alarm. When the owner got it to stop we again had something to cheer.
At last the wicket of Griffiths fell and was greeted by the lone vuvuzela. Ackerman heading for his career best obviously had little faith in Abbas  ( spelt Abaas on his shirt) as he promptly opened up with a big six almost into the Fox bar.
Ackerman ended carrying his bat but short of 200  as the innings ended just before lunch at 427.
With Middle on 8-0 we retired for  quick refreshments in the Cricketers pub. Not so quick that Kev didn't have time to lose his pass out stub!
Our batting was uninspiring with Robbo caught at 3rd slip, Holden LBW, and Eski  yorked. Mala looked solid but Stirlo tried an expansive drive at Griffiths and missed then repeated it and was dropped at slip.Thereafter he realed off some fine drives and at tea we were   136 -3 .
First ball on resuming Stirlo edged a four to bring up his 50  but two balls later he holed out tamely at mid wicket. One of the Leicester locals ironically shouted "C'mon the Middle "
Runs dried up although Mala stroked a four through mid wicket to pass 50 . The attrition was occasionally broken by aggression from Cartwright but he tried it once too often and skied a catch .
The first five wickets all fell with the score on a round number but once that sequence was broken at 203 -6  we folded quickly . Simmo got a toe crusher, Harry LBW, Finn &Patel fell first ball. Mala then turned down singles to keep the strike away from Murts . But we had something to cheer... the ice cream shop alarm was on again!
Murts was soon bowled , 233 all out. With only two overs to bowl we were surprised they didn't enforce the follow on. The excitement of Harris bowling Horton for a duck was limited but is this the start of an amazing fight back???

A fine innings from Ackermann with support from Dexter and the tail. A disappointing reply from Middlesex before an unexpected batting collapse from Leicestershire in their second innings set the visitors a fourth innings target of 381 to win.

We trust that we will see some of our batting with the resolve of Ackermann.
