Surrey salvage controversial draw
By David Slater
May 22 2004
Surrey batted out the day to save a draw against Middx at the Oval, largely because of the controversial "rain" dealy yesterday. Newman hit 87 and whilst Middx got a sudden blast of wickets, Brown and Hollioake steady the ship to guide Surrey to 300/4 before the captains shook hands for a draw.

Day 3 - "Rain" dents Middx's chances

A controversial delay to the start of the play could cost Middx dear. Whilst the North Londoners were ready to start at 11, Surrey claimed the bowlers run up was dangerously wet, causing a 5 hour delay. When play did start, Jamie Dalrymple, 182* over night, reached a career best 244 before being bowled by Murtagh. Chad Keegan also hit a top score (44) as Middx reached 487/9 before declaring with 5 overs to go.

Only 4.5 of them were bowled as Keegan trapped Jon Batty LBW to send Surrey into the second day 117 behind, with 9 wickets, in their second innings.

Day 2 - Awsome Dalrymple puts Middx in control

An awsome display from Jamie Dalrymple enabled Middlesex to stage an amazing recovery from 62/4 to 363/5 at the close. The 'rymple hit 182* from 234 and was a vital part, along with Ed Joyce (123) in a fifth wicket stand of 298, only 40 short of the club record. The day started badly with Hutton (15), Koenig (9) Shah (0) and Weekes (7) all losing their wickets early.

Day 1 - Poor bowling costs Middlesex dear

A poor display from the Middlesex bowlers helped Surrey recover from 126/6 to 359 all out at the Oval today after a last wicket partnership of 106 between Ormond and Murtagh. There was controversy when Sven Koenig caught Murtagh on the boundary rope but the umpire gave a 6. John Embury has placed a complant to the match referee.

In reply Middlesex were 23 for no loss at close of play.
