'Sex smash sabres
By Jeremy Horne
June 11 2004
A smashing unbeaten century from Paul Weekes saw Middlesex secure a superb 6 wicket victory over the Somerset Sabres at Lord's. Weekes was well supported by Owais Shah (54) and Ben Hutton (40) as Middlesex eased passed Somerset's total of 249-6 with 8 balls to spare.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Somerset started promisingly with a half century opening stand between Michael Burns and Carl Gazzard which began to eclipse memories of the debacle against Worcestershire in the C & G trophy. However, an all to familiar collapse followed as 4 wickets fell for 13 runs.

England one day player Ian Blackwell got of to a cagey start in an attempt to rebuild the Poachers' innings, but he soon found his feet and looked dangerous as several deliveries were clubbed for 6. Keith Parsons also provided good support to Blackwell and both recorded half centuries as Somerset clawed up to a total of 249-6 from their 45 overs. Simon Cook was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-35 from his 9 overs.

The recovery was never threatening to Middlesex though as Weekes batted through to see the 'sex safely home.
