Royals fail to dethrone Middlesex

Another fine display
By David Slater
May 2 2005
Middlesex kept a hold on top spot in the Totesport League with another tense win at Lord's. Having lost the toss and asked to field, the Londoners set about working on preventing what the Royal's batsemen did twice last season; setting an unbeatable target. After a short rain break that saw play...

... reduced to 44 overs a side, they did just that removing the opening 4 batsmen for 83. But David Leatherdale proved too hard a nut for the Middlesex bowlers to crack as he hit 72 not out, assisted by 36 from Smith as Worcestershire reached 201/7 at the end of their 44 overs. Scott Styris took 3 wickets, with two each for Chad Keegan and Ben Hutton.

"Vera" didn't add any more to the target for Middlesex who got off to a great start in their reply. Paul Weekes hit 62, launching a breath taking start with Ed Smith (46) as his assistant. The middle order wabbled a bit with 4 wickets falling for 9 runs. But a 51 run partnership between Hutton and the in form batsman Ed Joyce helped the Londoners recover and when Hutton was out, in came Keegan to hit 12 runs from 3 balls to give the hosts a 3 wicket win.
