Five Wickets
Resuming on 79-2, Glamorgan's batsmen rallied, with half centuries from Mark Wallace, Sourav Ganguly and Michael Powell guiding them to 208-4 and 262-6. It was the Kiwi who had the last word though, returning 5-57 and securing a solid victory for the 'sex, allowing us to move up into fourth place (ahead of Sorry)!
Day 2:
Middlesex were well on course for victory following a superb all round performance from Peter Trego on his Championship debut for us who followed up a quick-fire 72 from only 58 balls with 3-52 and a catch in the deep.
Resuming on 396 for six this morning and the early dismissal of Scott being bowled playing no shot, Middlesex slaughtered Glamorgan's bowling with a 122-run partnership between Trego and Jamie Dalrymple in only 15 overs.
Glamorgan's battle-weary attack had little answer to Trego's attacking approach which took him to a half-century in 38 balls. It was left to David Harrison to claim the last four Middlesex scalps, including 2 in 2 balls at end but unlikely to have chance to bowl hatrick ball..
Even without 3 first-choice new ball bowlers -our back-up duo Mel B and Trego ran through the top order as Glamorgan slumped to 89 for four. The killing blow was the run out of Ganguly being sent back going for a 1 run bye. obert Croft took it upon himself to take on the our bowlers scoring 84 in 76 ball. He was visibly angered by Glamorgan's poor batting show, throwing his bat on the floor and kicking the grass after Harrison was bowled by Dalrymple.
Croft shared in a 10th-wicket partnership of 60 of which Huw Waters contributed just one. This was frustrating as we didn't try to get Croft out by feeding him runs to get Walters on stike and when we did we couldn't bowl at stumps. Our part time bowler Joyce finally broke partnerdhip with Croft being caught in deep with everyone on boundary.
After tea Glam were asked to bat again. Betts reduced Glamorgan to 32 for two, claiming the wickets of Dan Cherry ( Cherry O) and David Hemp, before Mark Wallace and Hughes guided their side to the close in an unbroken stand worth 54. still needing 302 to avoid innings defeat.
With a poor forecast ahead on rain can save Glamorgan now
Day 1:
Owais Shah scored a century despite being dropped off a dolly by David Hemp at 2nd slip when on 2 which proved to be turning point as the 'Sex took control on the first day. Ace helped ease us towards a challenging first innings total on a good Sophia Gardens pitch. Shah was out two balls after reaching three figures following a juggled catch by wicketkeeper Mark Wallace.
After winning the toss, Middlesex had made steady progress through Ed Smith and Ben Hutton until the introduction into the attack of schoolboy Huw Waters, not in my Playfair, who looked best of Glamorgan bowlers. He struck in his third over forcing Smith to play on. Smith was annoyed with this rash shot and noises were heard from pavillion.
But, from 40 for one 'Sex were indebted to Hutton and Shah for a productive partnership of 109. The second wicket pair were separated when Hutton carellesly drove uppishily to cover and caugt for 72. A ton would have been nice. Ed Joyce had looked in good touch before he was third man out giving a return catch for David Harrison from a leading edge. Shah and Scott Styris took us to 267 before they lost two wickets without any addition to the score and this mini collapse caused concern.
After tea Rymps and Weekesey looked comfortable and the 6th wicket made 69 runs when Weekes was caught behind off Croft. Dalrymple went on to make 50. Middlesex finished at 396-6 closing in on maximum batting points in a excellent position. Hopefully our 3 spinners will capitilise on a turning pitch
