Cause for optimism at Old Trafford

Peter Moores

March 13 2009
After the bitter disappointment of missing out on the title by 25 runs in 2007 and the poor mid table finish in 2008, there is a confidence around Lancashire CCC.

The decisions to release Stuart Law and Dominic Cork at the end of the 2008 season were seen as controversial, but the Lancs squad was beginning to creak, it was time to start the bring in the new broom and get the floor swept. The likes of Brown, Newby, Kerrigan and Mullaney will be chomping at the bit to take any chances they will get in the team, and that can only be a good thing. For years, Lancashire have relied on the vast experience of Law, Cork, Keedy and Chapple, players who have been and in a couple of cases still are, great servants of the club, but the time has come for Lancs to look to the future and the new Moores era is the perfect opportunity to blood the youngsters and hopefully get them to learn from the experienced pros in the squad.
It is also great to see Lancs bringing in quality from overseas. Ashwell Prince is in for the start of the season, with the return of VVS Laxman once the IPL is out of the way. This has always been a hit and miss with Lancs over the years in my view, for every Akram there was an Elworthy, for Murail there was a Ganguly, for Hooper there was a Hodge, players who didn’t quite do it when playing at Old Trafford. The two signings this season are solid and reliable and will surely be assets to the team.
And then there is the coach. Moores was in my view treated harshly by the ECB over the winter and will be chomping at the bit to prove his critics wrong, and he is in the best place possible to do this. He is at a club that has waited for so long to win the championship that, should he bring it to Old Trafford, he will be a legend in M16. And what better way to stick up metaphorical two fingers? He has something to prove and a track record in the county game to suggest that he can do it. He has the ability to get the best from his players, something that to me has been lacking at Lancs in the past, that skill to get just that bit extra from the players.
Supporters of the Red Rose County will be hoping that the success Moores brought to Sussex will be repeated at Lancashire and I personally don’t see why it can’t be. I can’t wait for the season to start.

I view the recruitment of Peter Moores,as the most positive move the county have made in years.
A local lad with a proven track record elsewhere and everyone's choice as England's coach until so digracefully got rid of,he possesses all the quality to succeed.
Whilst one appreciates the contribution of Law and Cork in the past,I cannot argue with the descision to move on,as both their inputs last season could be construed as not in the best interests of a united side and with a new captain and coach in place, time to look forward, without the hindrance of potentially disruptive elements.
