The strategic timeout, which was introduced last year, was criticised by players and fans alike.
The IPL Chairman, Lalit Modi was forced to introduce the shorter duration for the new season, after senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, Captain, Mumbai Indians, complained that the longer breaks affected the momentum of the matches.
The earlier time-out stretched to 7.5 minutes each team, while the new time-out would be just 2.5 minutes each time.
IPL management argues that time-outs are good for teams, as the IPL being fast paced, players on the field may be missing vital strategy at crucial moments, which could be pointed out by players sitting in the dug-out.
However, T.A. Sekar, Director of Cricket for Mumbai Indians says one cannot do much in a shorter time, and 'ultimately you cannot re-invent the wheel', he remarked.
There is no doubt that IPL earned good ad-revenues from these time-outs last year, and a shorter version would cut-off its earning a bit.
