High profile release

By reducing the squad size, Essex hope to be able to afford a quality overseas bowler, something that was sorely lacking from the county's season.
Darren Robinson is the most high-profile of those released. The long serving batsman has had a poor 2003, couple with several injuries and with him being out of contract, he has made way so Graham Gooch can strengthen the squad.
Barry Hyam, now third choice keeper, was the less surprising of the releases, having had James Foster and Andy Flower ahead of him for the past two seasons.
Seamers Andrew McGarry and Joe Grant have also made way; two decisions you can understand after poor returns in the first team and injuries, while Nick Denning's release seems odd, as he did not get a chance in the first XI.
We at Scimitars wish all five the best in their cricketing careers.
