Surrey wrapped up promotion to the County Championship Division one after beating Glamorgan by 218 runs at the Brit Oval. Skipper Mark Butcher led his side home with two hundreds in the match as the Brown Caps come straight back up after relegation last season.

Day One

Surrey won the toss and decided to bat, but lost Batty early for 5. Newman was next to go as he was adjudged leg before wicket to Waters. Ramprakash and Butcher then added a crucial stand of 124. Ramprakash passed 2,000 runs for the season as he made 77. Brown and Schofield both fell cheaply to leave Surrey 198 for 5. Butcher and Mahmood then added 192. Mahmood made 101, while Butcher hit 151, before being stumped by Wallace off Croft. At the close of play Surrey were 397 for seven.

Day Two

Surrey reached 433 all out, with Neil Saker making a useful 22. Glamorgan had a bad start as they were reduced to 48 for four, with Azhar Mahmood taking two wickets. Franklin was next to go for 26 as he was caught behind with Mo Akram taking the wicket. Grant quickly followed for nine as Chris Schofeild took his first wicket in the County Championship since being released by Lancashire in 2004.

Wallace and Croft added 45, with Wallace making 22 before falling to Saker. Harrison then joined Croft and they added 59. Harrison made 40 before falling leg before wicket to Doshi. Cosker also added support with 39. Croft finished on 70 not out as Glamorgan made 269 all out.

Surrey had a bad start to their innings, as they lost Batty for a duck, Ramprakash for 31 and Newman for 13 in the last over of the day.

Day Three

Night-watchman Saker added valuable support to Butcher as they added 65. Butcher and Brown then took the game away with a partnership of 137. Butcher made his second century of the match with 108 before failing caught behind off Harrison. Ali Brown also made a hundred from just 86 balls with six fours and six sixes. Azhar Mahmood made a useful contribution of 30 not out from 22 balls as Surrey declared on 309 for 5.

Glamorgan lost openers Watkins and Cosgrove early. Hemp and Powell added a stand of 110. Powell fell for 43 to Saker. Chris Schofield took the next three wickets of Grant, Franklin and Wallace, to leave the Welsh side 168 for 6. Doshi then got in on the act with the wickets of Croft and Harrison. Salisbury then took the wicket of Hep for an excellent 155. Four balls later, the win was complete as Salisbury took the wicket of Waters as Surrey won by 218 runs.
