Surrey fail in promotion bid

Surrey missed out on promotion in the pro40 league after a seven wicket defeat by Somerset at Taunton. Surrey could only made 177 from 40 overs, with John Batty top scoring with 40. Somerset reached their target from just 20.3 overs, with Will Durston hitting 51.

Newman fell early on for eight as he was caught behind with Cadddick taking the wicket. Brown was next to go for 11 as Surrey were left 30 for two. Mark Ramprakash and Mark Butcher added 50. Ramprakash fell for 25 and was quickly followed by Azhar Mahmood for one. When Butcher was caught by Parsons with Durston taking the wicket, Surrey were left 90 for five. Clarke and Batty added a crucial stand of 35. Clarke was dismissed for 26, when he was bowled by Durston who took his third wicket. Batty top scored with 40, but Surrey only made 177 for 9.

Somerset had a good start as Wood and Suppiah added 59 for the first wicket. Suppiah and Hildreth then added 77. Hildreth fell for 39 from just 21 balls when he was caught and bowled by Doshi. Suppiah fell the same way for 51. However Ian Blackwell hit 27 not out to guide Somerset to an easy seven wicket victory. They reached the target from just 20.3 overs.
