Staffordshire made a reasonable total of 186, which Richard Harvey top scoring with 42. Wilshaw (20) Thomas (21) and veteran batsmen Kim Barnett (20) also added valuable runs. James Ormond was the top wicket taker for the lions, as he claimed three scalps.
The Surrey reply sated badly as they were reduced to 47 for 4, with former Middlesex placemen David Follet taking three wickets. Ramprakash and Brown then added 65 to leave the lions 112 for 4 and looking set for victory. However Brown the fell to another former Middlesex player, Iamran Tahir for 36. Ramprakash and Clarke then added 30, but when on 49, Ramprakash was run out and the lions were looking in trouble with the score at 142 for 6. Rikki Clarke stayed at the crease and scored a vital 27 to steer the lion’s home. He fell just before the end to Thomas, which set up a nervy finish. However there was to be no upset as Martin Bicknell finished the match in style with a six.
If Surrey had lost, this would have been the second time in two years they had suffered a shock defeat in the C and G trophy as last season they went out to Ireland in the first round.
