Benning Blitz not enough
By Ben Horne
June 20 2006
James Benning hit 189 not out, but it was not enough as Gloucester beat Surrey by two runs in the C and G trophy match at Bristol. With three needed from two balls Neil Saker was run out by Craig Spearman to give Gloucestershire a dramatic victory.

Gloucestershire had a good start as Spearman and Ali put on 75 for the first wicket. Both fell in the forties to Murtagh and Salisbury respectively. Doshi took the wicket of Gidman, and were left Gloucestershire were 140 for 3.

Marshall and Harvey then took control against the Surrey bowlers as they shared in a stand of 108.Marshall fell to Doshi, while Harvey was run out for 108. Doshi also took the wicket of Snell and when Salisbury dismissed of Taylor Gloucestershire were left 262 for 7. However David Brown hit 63 not out from just 26 balls. His innings included seven fours and five sixes. Gloucestershire reached a massive total of 339 for 8 from their 50 overs.

Surrey had a bad start as Batty and Butcher were dismissed in successive balls by former Surrey paceman Carl Greenidge. Benning and Newman then added 84. Newman fell for 19 again to Greenidge. Benning had to wait until the sixth wicket for another partnership to develop, as he added 46 with Stuart Walters.

Despite Benning looking unbeatable, Surrey looked out of the game at 280 for 9. However Benning and Saker reduced the deficit, to leave Surrey requiring eight from the last over and a tense finish was in stall. This become three of two balls. On the penultimate ball Saker was run out for 22, giving Gloucestershire a win by just two runs.

Benning’s score of 189 was the highest ever score for a Surrey batsman in one day cricket outside the Oval.
