Falcons Foil The Vikings

By Gary Watton

Annoyingly, this was the one that got away. In fact, many Vikings followers as well as players were probably left scratching their heads at how the team did almost everything but win against the dastardly Falcons. Maybe the visitors were guilty of not taking their opponents as seriously as the Nottinghamshire Outlaws from the evening before. In the event the home team recovered from a poor start to post a decent total, aided by nineteen runs off the penultimate over, bowled by Willey. While Patterson and Bresnan bowled exceptionally well, the same could not be said of the usually reliable pair of Rafiq and Rashid. Nonetheless, Yorkshire's chances of a successful run chase were probably at least fifty-five per cent.

Unfortunately for the Tykes, their innings staggered along and fell narrowly short of the required total. The fact that the innings opened with a maiden over was simply suicidal. Even come the penultimate over, where the away team had been spanked for nineteen runs, they themselves could only muster an inadequate five runs. It left the captain Tim Bresnan almost needing snookers in the last over, but even then he almost pulled a rabbit out of the hat, only to be dismissed off the last ball with four runs needed.

It remains to be seen whether this hard luck story will come back to haunt the Vikings. For them, Twenty20 cricket remains frustratingly a case of one step forward and one step back.
