A Remarkable Triumph

By Gary Watton

Yorkshire's outstanding away day limited overs form continued, as they safely negotiated the difficult Essex hurdle. They must now hope that their sterling efforts on the road will be repeated with their semi final trip to Southampton's Rose Bowl next Monday. Essex actually made a hash of this contest when they reduced the visitors to 45 for four but failed to nail down their advantage. Fortunately the Tykes' middle order got their team out of a deep dungeon. First the pairing of Ballance and Leaning led the counter attack and then the unlikely duo of Bresnan and Fisher ensured that a competitive target would be set. Whilst the much-vaunted Nottinghamshire failed abysmally to defend their 250 against Kent, the Tykes had little problem in chipping away at the Essex batting line up for the third time this season.

Although the admirable Adam Wheater refused to throw in the towel, it was Steven Patterson who dominated the proceedings, while good luck charm Karl Carver acquired two priceless wickets. This win was rendered all the more remarkable as the England team had plundered no fewer than five of our most valuable players. This triumph against the odds, handicapped by six notable absentees including India's Pujara, is something that team and supporters alike should be immensely proud of.
