Durham start title defense

Durham start their county championship title defense against Essex today as they aim to become the first count to win the championship three times in a row since Yorkshire completed the treble over 30 years ago.

The 13 man squad to take on Essex includes star opener Michael Di Venuto who will be making his 300th first classs appearanc. Di Venuto already has a first class century this season, scoring 172 in the curtain raiser against the MCC in Abu Dhabi. While the weather won't be quite as warm at the Riverside, at least the team will be on familar ground with a red ball and no floodlights!

Essex enjoyed a winning start to their season with a 62 run win over hampshire. The game ended in dramatic style with the final wicket falling on the 5th delivery of the final over of the match.

Another Durham player who may see first team action today is Luke Evans who could start for Northants in their match against Gloucestershir. Luke has moved to Northants on loan.
