Collingwood takes five as Somerset struggle
By Jon Steer
May 6 2005
Five wickets for Paul Collingwood gave Durham the upper hand on the first day of their match with Somerset at Stockton. Harmison and Davies took two wickets each with Plunkett taking one. Somerset would have done a lot worse if it wasn't for a century stand for the fifth wicket.
In the clash of England opening batsmen and opening bowler, Harmison took the spoils when he had Trescothick caught behind for 21 at the end of his fourth over. Mark Davies then continued his run of good performances by removing Burns and Jayasuriya for 11 and 2 respectively. When Harmison returned before lunch to remove Francis, Somerset were in trouble at 84-4.

Somerset survived until lunch without further loss and then set about putting their innings back on track. Some aggressive hitting from Blackwell and Hildreth brought up their century partnership before Paul Collingwood struck a crucial blow, removing Blackwell for 48 from just 44 balls.

Liam Plunkett then removed Laraman for six before he had a chance to get going and wickets were falling at a steady rate with Colly responsible for all of the last four dismissals including Hildreth for an impressive 70.

Durham had gone into the match with just one change from the team that had won against Leicestershire and Worcestershire. Graham Bridge made his first appearance of the season as the management decided that an extra bowler would be a good move. Nicky Peng was the batsman to miss out.

Playing an extra bowler suggests that Durham expect their to be plenty of runs in the pitch and indeed that was the case the last time they played at the Stockton ground almost exactly 2 years ago. In that match Worcs scoresd 395 in their first innings before rain piut paid to any chance of a result despite some trickery from the two captains.

With this in mind Somerset's 252 all out looks very beatable.
