Plunkett and Davies forge recovery
By Jon Steer
May 7 2005
Resuming at 141-7 this morning, Durham were in deep trouble and it got worse when Andrew Caddick took his sixth wicket of the innings to take the score to 160-8. But Liam Plunkett and Mark Davies batted brilliantly to take Durham into the lead.
Plunkett and Davies dealt with everything that was thrown at them - long spells from Andre Caddick with support from Johnson, Laraman and Blackwell. The pair kept on calmly adding to the total as they took Durham to the 200 and a first batting point, then to 250 and another batting point.

When the score reached 253-8, the pair had taken Durham to a first innings lead, something that had seemed impossible at the start of the day. Davies previous highest score was 39 but he showed no signs of nerves as he claimed his first championship half century. Plunkett also made his 50 and passed his previous high of 55.

With Durham's ninth wicket record stand of 127 (coincidentally made at Stockton back in 1992) in sight, Mark Davies was bowled by Sanath Jayasuriya. The partnership was worth 124 very valuable runs.

Steve Harmison was then trapped lbw in Jayasuriya's next over to leave Liam Plunkett on 74 not out and Durham's total 298. With a first innings lead of almost 50 when a deficit of twice as much had seemed more likely Durham were right back in the match.

Somerset started their innings slowly but were unable to prevent Steve Harmison from picking up the wickets of Marcus Trescothick and John Francis. When Paul Collingwood had Jayasuriya caught as slip by Hussey from his second ball of the innings Somerset were reeling on 74-3 at tea.

With rain accounting for over two hours of the evening session, Somerset finished the day on 88-3, a lead of 42.
