MIke Hussey and Jon Lewis took to the field half way through the morning session with a larger target than they would have hoped for. The target was down to another tail-wagging effort as Ian Blackwell and Andrew Caddick pushed Somerset's score to 288 all out. Steve Harmison and Paul Collingwood finally removing the troublesome pair.
Colly in the process brought about his best ever match figures to add to his first ever five wicket haul from the first innings.
Hussey and Lewis started quickly, but it didn't last as Lewis and then Colly were removed by Caddick to leave Durham on 31-2. Gordon Muchall then came to the crease and proved to be a good support to Mike Hussey as the captain took the fight to the bowlers, deciding that attack was the best policy. Their stand was worth 62 when Caddick had Muchall caught. Hussey couldn't keep his attack going and fell in the next over having scored 51 from 65 balls. With the score on 98-4 there was still a long way to go.
Dale Benkenstein joined Gareth Breese at the wicket and the two of them took a slightly different approach - Caddick was given a lot of respect but Blackwell and Laraman in particular came in for punishment. When Caddick was eventually rested, the scoring rate increased as both batsmen started to find the conditions to their liking. Somerset took the only option they could and brought back Caddick with immediate effect - Benkenstein was caught behind for 51 after a 91 run partnership with Breese.
Phil Mustard was the new man in and started in blocking mode, which suited Breese fine as he was left to get on with the scoring. Mustard however soon got his eye in and hit three fours in two overs before taking one risk too many and being bowled by Caddick. The hard work had been done though and there were just 30 runs needed to win.
With the tension mounting but fortunately the rain staying away, Breese decided that he could be in danger of running out of partners and started to attack Ian Blackwell with three fours from one over. Liam Plunkett at the other end looked happy enough defending against Caddick and Breese took Durham past the winning post with another boundary.
After Breese's heroics at Taunton last season, Somerset will be very wary of the Jamaican next time they meet...
