Cricket Museum gets Windfall

Takes th Pressure off
By Grockle
December 2 2009
I've just received this from Richard Walsh and thought I'd pass it on. Partly because it is really good news to a very important asset at the County Ground and partly because it covers us for the next fortnight in terms of a frontpage story. Well done Richard, great news for the barn and thanks a lot.
From Richard Walsh

On behalf of the Somerset Cricket Museum Trustees.

Dear All
Please find a press release from the Somerset Cricket Museum which I hope you will be able to make use of in the near future.
All Best Wishes
Richard.

The Somerset Cricket Museum receives an early 21st birthday present!

The Somerset Cricket Museum, which first opened it’s doors in 1989, has received an early 21st birthday present by way of a legacy of more than £250,000.

The legacy has been left by Miss Patricia Watts, although the trustees of the Museum think that Miss Watts was probably following the wishes of her brother, Mr David Watts, who was an active member of Somerset County Cricket Club in the Bath area until his death in 2004.

The Museum is situated in the Old Priory Barn, a Grade Two listed building, and although it is located within the boundaries of the County Ground in Taunton behind the Centre of Excellence, is run entirely as an independent organization and is a registered charity.

The team of dedicated volunteers who initially raised £100,000 to enable the Somerset Cricket Museum to be established, have over the years assembled a fascinating and varied collection of Somerset cricketing memorabilia, as well as a reference and lending library.

The future of the Somerset Cricket Museum which is widely acclaimed as one of the best of it’s kind in the country now looks to be secure- thanks to this legacy.

Chairman Charles Clive Ponsonby- Fane, whose family has strong connections with ‘I Zingari’ one of the best know cricket clubs in the world, said: “We think that in 2004 Mr David Watts died and left his estate to his sister with the understanding that when she died the Cricket Museum would be one of her beneficiaries.  Miss Patricia Watts died in August of this year, leaving us the legacy.”

He added: “Next year will be the Museum’s twenty first birthday.  This generous gift will allow us all a wonderful opportunity to look back on all that has been achieved and explore our aspirations for the future.  It is my hope that we can safeguard the wellbeing of the Somerset Cricket Museum for the generations to come.”

Someone the other day was saying what a great place this little treasure house is.
Pleasing then, that its future has been secured by a generous legacy.

I was that someone, back in the summer, and I remember mentioning that, rather disappointingly, only one of the current players had visited the place. You may also remember BJ's delight in the size and weight of the bat with which Bill Alley scored 3000 in a season. It is a simply wonderful place for anyone who loves Somerset cricket.

I shall probably leave my growing collection of cricketana to the Museum when I pop off (not, of course, until we've won the championship). It's important if anyone has similar plans to distinguish between the museum, a registered charity, and the county club.

I thought it was you, LoL, but was already running late for collecting the kids and couldn't check. I intend to visit the Museum as soon as the opportunity arises.

If you leave it long enough, you can see what I've left them.

The museum is a fantastic place,it is a must for anyone who supports the county cricket team.
When I first became a member there several years ago I didn't think it could improve but incredibly it seems to get better every year.
The people who run it are real heroes, friendly and approachable with a wealth of fascinating knowledge.
It only costs a couple of quid to join,it must be the bargain of the century.

Just been discussing double barrelled names with some rugby friends.

Very RFU isn't it?

Anyone for rugger?

I have to make with the simple Jo-Nes.

Not quite the same.

I agree with everything which LoL and BJ have said about both the place and the people who run it.

I suspect that cricket would be a more attractive game if batsmen were compelled to use bats of the size and weight of Bill Alley's.

Don't you two get me started on the bat again.
I urge, and I mean urge you all to go and have a look at it.
The skill and artestry required to do what he did takes my breath away, just think what he could have done with the half of Sherwood forest batsmen use today.
He'd have been the only player to have scored 15,000 in one season.

Go and have a look.
Read 'em and weep.

Superb news that a museum dedicated to a Counties cricket history exists let alone the fact it will do so for many years to come thanks to this legacy .

Having no home ourselves (Middlesex) we do not have a museum but a pretty full one it would be if we did .We "make do" with a couple of cabinets in the Middlesex Room at Lord's .

Ah well just have to make do with my once a season tour of the Lord's one then and a look round yours when I visit Somerset .

Articles like this are what keeps sites going over the closed season so keep them coming folks , we don't want to see you "drop off" during the winter .

According to others elsewhere the 'drop off' is due to our inability to moderate properly.

As all but the Mighty MTWD have been off it's down to Ged and you boys to show us all the way.

Unless it's just more hot air wafting from the warmer climes of the Sub continental cricket hub.

If your 'museum' is a couple of cupboards in the pavilion, that's not exactly open to the public, is it, Diamond?

Anyone would think that Lord's was some sort of elitist place! (Sm14)

SP the cabinets are in the Middlesex Room , open to members of other Counties (as is the bar) , not the all hallowed Pav where even we are forbidden without a tie and jacket !!
