Coad Demolishes Hapless Warwickshire

By Gary Watton

The Tykes brought to an end a dismal run of three consecutive County Championship defeats, as they emphatically trounced mediocre Warwickshire. Quite frankly, where would Yorkshire be without a generous helping of County Championship points each season from Warwickshire, a decent team that consistently underperforms in first class cricket against the white rose county? Whilst many of our batsmen chipped in with useful runs, it was the bowling exploits of young Ben Coad that once again caught the eye. Peculiarly the raw but red hot Coad had reduced the hosts to seven for five in their abject second innings. For a few farcical minutes, one was left wondering if the home team would even muster a double figures score!

Warwickshire versus YORKSHIRE; in Birmingham; Friday the fourteenth to Monday the seventeenth of April. YORKSHIRE chose to bowl first.

Warwickshire first innings: 178 (Barker 50; Coad 5-52)

YORKSHIRE first innings: 381 (Handscomb 75, Rashid 65, Bresnan 61; Barker 3-74)

Warwickshire second innings: 115 (Coad 5-50)

YORKSHIRE win by an innings and 88 runs. Warwickshire two points, YORKSHIRE 23 points.

Lyth - One catch and a brief innings that amounted to eight runs didn't represent a satisfactory return. Fortunately, several others excelled themselves.

Lees - 36 runs from a two-hour vigil is a step in the right direction, but Alex really needs to cash in when he sees off the new ball, and he often doesn't.

Handscomb - His 75 came off only 110 balls and featured twelve boundaries. This was a much better effort from the Australian ace. More of the same please.

Ballance - The captain missed out this time, producing only twenty-two runs from his eighty-four minutes at the crease, but his decision to bowl first was vindicated.

Leaning - Forty runs from his 130-minute stint was desperately needed, but he also needs to convert starts into big scores, to compensate for many low scores.

Bresnan - Back amongst the runs after his Hampshire debacle, big Tim also took three catches, and grabbed two wickets, having bowled less than ten match overs.

Rashid - Not just back among the runs too, Adil amassed them at a healthy scoring rate. He also took three wickets at a cost of only 31 runs from thirteen overs.

Hodd - Five catches and a useful cameo of 28 quick runs amounted to four good days at the office for the wicket keeper.

Willey - Dave's twenty-four overs cost sixty-two runs and he claimed two top order batsmen in their extraordinary Sunday collapse. He hit nineteen runs too.

Patterson - SP chipped in with three useful wickets, costing forty-seven runs, from sixteen overs. He also hit thirteen runs in our only innings.

Coad - The county's latest prodigy bamboozled the hosts, with ten wickets from forty overs, including fourteen maidens, costing 102 runs. This was a superb effort.
