Northamptonshire Trounced

By Gary Watton
May 10 2017

Gary Ballance, in the midst of a Bradman-esque patch for Yorkshire, rescued his flagging team, after the loss of three early wickets almost vindicated the hosts' bold but ultimately foolish decision to bowl first. The Tykes duly chalked up their fifth group win out of six, and it is no coincidence that their only defeat came when batting second. Why opposing captains ask us to bat first is logic-defying. There is always going to be someone in our top quintet who seems likely to pile on the runs. Today, with Handscomb recording a rare failure, it was left to the captain, ably assisted by young Waite and Mr Rashid, to transform our innings and post yet another fairly formidable target.

After Ballance's end of innings fireworks display, the momentum was clearly with the away team. They then tore into the Northamptonshire top order, quickly nullifying any semblance of a contest, as young Coad and Mr Willey shared four wickets between them before the reply could even start taking baby steps. This hammer blow knocked the stuffing out of the run chase, and the home team meekly surrendered without even posting half of Yorkshire's total. Our very own answer to Edmonds and Emburey, namely Rafiq and Rashid polished off the tail with much aplomb.

One almost hopes that no England selectors were present, as the performances of Ballance, Coad, and Rafiq too could conceivably leave Yorkshire having to field an actual second eleven to coincide with an England fixture! Anyhow, although the impressive white rose have strung together a staggering five wins from six, their qualification to the latter stages (almost a racing certainty) won't be nailed down until some of the others in the group have mortally wounded each other over the course of the next couple of days. As it stands, Yorkshire look well on course for a one-day final, but how often has this delusion been nurtured in recent years?!
