Batting Frailties In Scarborough

By Gary Watton

Yorkshire's atrocious batting inadequacies were cruelly exposed once more - this time by bottom of the table Worcestershire who romped to a landslide triumph against pitiful Yorkshire. The good and faithful citizens of 'Scarbados' will be wondering what they have done to deserve such awful fare from their own team. Some of our batsmen don't seem to know where their next run is coming from. Nobody seems able to construct a lengthy innings. Relegation beckons, unless the team familiarise themselves with substantial run scoring, as demonstrated by lowly Worcestershire.

YORKSHIRE versus Worcestershire; in Scarborough; Sunday the nineteenth to Wednesday the 22nd of August. Worcestershire won the toss.

YORKSHIRE first innings: 216 (Williamson 87; Pennington 4-53, Barnard 3-32)

Worcestershire first innings: 572 for seven declared (Moeen 219, Mitchell 178; Poysden 3-128)

YORKSHIRE second innings: 170 (Williamson 61; Moeen 6-49)

Worcestershire win by an innings and 186 runs. YORKSHIRE one point, Worcestershire 24 points.

Lyth - Mediocre scores of twenty and seventeen said it all. His bowling was equally 'good', taking two wickets, but conceding ninety-seven runs from nineteen overs.

Brook - Our replacement for the departed Lees could only make do with the woefully inadequate knocks of six and sixteen. Young man, are you Alex in disguise?

Williamson - The only 'Tyke' exempt from criticism is our Kiwi batsman. He really needs to teach his team mates how to hold a bat and build a half-decent innings.

Ballance - Gary has brought along his miserable Twenty20 form. Having been relieved of the captaincy, Ballance might soon be relieved of batting duties too.

Kohler-Cadmore - An erratic but sometimes brilliant performer in Twenty20, TKC has been much more consistent in four-day cricket: consistently awful to be precise.

Tattersall - Jonathan didn't disgrace himself with a 27 and was then left unbeaten on fifteen. He'll be disappointed that he didn't take a catch during their long innings.

Bresnan - Tim's batting prowess from previous seasons appears to have deserted him. He also bowled twenty-two overs, costing ninety-one runs, taking one wicket.

Willey - Dave is another Jekyll and Hyde who is superb in one-day cricket and very underwhelming in the longer version. He was at least our most economical bowler.

Fisher - Matt was certainly not our worst performer. He built an undefeated twenty, while his 26 overs cost eighty-four runs, which wasn't too horrifying.

Brooks - JB outscored many of our batsmen with a 38 and a nine. He took their first wicket, but then had to settle for 77 runs conceded from his 23 overs.

Poysden - Josh contributed a solitary run in each innings. His three wickets cost 128 runs from 25.2 overs. His Yorkshire career can only get better, it's safe to say.
