Somerset Stuff The Tykes

Not for the first time in the last three years, Somerset succeeded in trouncing hapless Yorkshire. Martyn Moxon was foolishly upbeat after this setback, but there appears a worrying descent towards the second division. The visitors actually timed their declaration to perfection in so far as they ensured plenty of cricket on the final day. However, the declaration looked way too cautious, as the hosts never seemed likely to get anywhere near four hundred runs. Although Somerset seemed to unnecessarily delay the declaration, they still managed to roll over the top two skittles in the Yorkshire batting order on the third session of the third day. Yorkshire did bat a bit better in this match, but worryingly nobody seems capable of recording a century, which is ominous for this struggling team.

YORKSHIRE versus Somerset; in Leeds; Wednesday the 29th of August to Saturday the first of September. YORKSHIRE won the toss and chose to bowl.

Somerset first innings: 399 (Azhar Ali 89, Hildreth 81, Davies 80, Gregory 65; Brooks 5-116, Willey 3-74)

YORKSHIRE first innings: 320 (Hodd 85, Kohler-Cadmore 81; Davey 5-65, C.Overton 3-59)

Somerset second innings: 339 for seven declared (Abell 132*, Hildreth 72, Gregory 57; Willey 3-72)

YORKSHIRE second innings: 194 (Williamson 51; J.Overton 4-25, Gregory 4-33)

Somerset won by 224 runs. YORKSHIRE five points, Somerset twenty two points.

Lyth - His post-England career appears to be in irreversible decline. Scores of 45 and then four simply won't do. At least he took one wicket and four catches.

Brook - He was twice bowled by Gregory for a pathetic two and a duck. The bold move to select Harry as Alex Lees's replacement has not yet been vindicated.

Williamson - Kane was twice dismissed by Craig Overton for a total of 69 runs. Yorkshire really needed him to convert his starts into centuries.

Ballance - Just when his team badly need a few good scores, Gary could only produce forty-one runs in another underwhelming batting performance.

Leaning - Jack is trying the patience of his employers, mustering a puny total of six match runs. He could find himself following Alex Lees through the club's exit.

Kohler-Cadmore - Tom followed up his excellent first-innings contribution with a duck egg second time around which underlines his apparent inconsistency.

Hodd - Although twice dismissed by Gregory, Hoddy didn't deserve to be on the losing team, having taken four catches and hit a commendable total of 109 runs.

Fisher - Matthew had a match to forget. He scored nineteen runs in two innings and his 28 overs cost 135 runs, yielding two wickets. Improvement is required!

Willey - The stand-in captain's decision to bowl first proved none too clever. He bowled well in the first innings but was more expensive the second time around.

Brooks - The outgoing seamer conceded a whopping 197 runs in the match. He also fell foul of both Overtons when he tried unsuccessfully to make many runs.

Shaw - He weighed in with fifty-two useful runs, but his bowling is still below par, taking only two wickets at a cost of 114 runs from thirty expensive overs.
