With a lull in the Cricket action...thought this may stir some discussion...

Both places have produced incredible cricketers from a limited population base. Would be great to see a 3 match Test series played between these two sides, one each at the Brabourne Stadium, Kensington Oval and Wankhede Stadium

My squads:

Barbados:

Desmond Haynes, Godon Greenidge, Conrad Hunte, Everton Weekes, Frank Worrell (capt.), Gary Sobers, Clyde Walcott, Keith Boyce, Malcolm Marshall, Wesley Hall, Joel Garner

Reserves: Seymour Nurse, Collis King, Charlie Griffith, Sylvester Clarke, Vanburn Holder

Bombay:

Sunil Gavaskar (capt.), Vijay Merchant, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sachin Tendulkar, Polly Umgrigar, Vinoo Mankad, Farokh Engineer, Dattu Phadkar, Zaheer Khan, Subhash Gupte, Padmakar Shivalkar

Reserves: Vijay Manjrekar, Ramakant Desai, Dilip Sardesai, Ravi Shastri, Eknath Solkar, Karsan Ghavri, Bapu Nadkarni

Do you even know about Phadkar? And Gupte and Shivalkar and Mankad would be an awsome spin trio...

btw, I'd take Ajit Agarkar over Mhambrey...smiling smiley

..yeah apparently Mumbai's Garfield Sobers.

Shivalkar could not even make it to the Indian team -ever, even when S Venkat was just a fill in mediocre spinner.

He was very unfortunate... the selectors for some reason never wanted two SLAs...though they were OK with two Off spinners in Venkat and Prasanna...

Mhambray with a FC bowling average of under 25..?

Well if you go by FC averages...then Ramakant Desai would be the man....

Chandu Borde represented Maharashtra , with current slow pitches all over the world MUmbai is little favorite than Barbados.

Atul the 3 matches are at Brabourne, Bridgetown, Wankhade so yes, the Mumbai team's spinners do have an edge...

..i think kambli din't get a fair run in tests - still finished with avg in mid 50's. Would have him over England Specialist Vengsarkar.

I added him to the reserves list...after I had to drop Chandu Borde... when Atul corrected me that Borde was not a Bombay player...smiling smiley

In Barbados I'd definitely go for a pace trio... Zakky, Desai and Phadkar... with Gupte, Mankad and Umrigar providing spin...

The pace trio couldn't match Windies'...but the spin department is miles ahead...

Definitely Kambli deserves consideration if 2 of the 3 games are in Mumbai.....

Even Sandeep Patil over Solkar....

It's be interesting to do a NSW team on similar lines....

Solkar may be included just for his short leg catching to the spin trio...smiling smiley

bump...

and ananthd why don't you or one of the Aussie posters come up with a NSW team...

Yorkshire may be another one... or maybe even Middlesex...though the later would have the advantage of many overseas players...

NSW team would be tough & easy at the same time....

The obvious names are Bradman, Miller, Waugh, Benaud and the like....

Let me dig deeper....

24 needed with a bunny coming in at 11? No problem!

Actually Karnataka would have very good all time teams...

Karnataka may look like

Sudhakar Rao, [an opening bat], Rahul Dravid, G.R. Viswanath, Brijesh Patel, Roger Binny, Syed Kirmani, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, Erappali Prasanna, B.S. Chandrasekhar

Unfortunately it's an anachronistic comparison - the Barbados greats were from decades ago, while Bombay continues to produce great cricketers.

With the riches in IPL, West Indies no longer has the excuse that their best athletes turn to basketball or running. They have just become lazier.

Actually only Sachin and Zaheer Khan are modern Bombay players who make the all time team... Bombay too is getting lazier?

No mumbai is still winning ranji trophies - it's also a case of other teams getting better - unlike west indies - where cricket in general seems to be in decline

Since I wrote this many years ago.. Mumbai has not produced another player worthy of inclusion... at one time I thought Rahane would be and also possibly Rohit...

Now counting on young Prithvi Shaw.... though Shreyas Iyer is also waiting in the wings...

As for Karnataka... with Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul (I know he has been up and down in Tests) their batting is a bit more solid...

As for Barbados... no new player seems worthy of consideration... that is very sad.

Well Jason Holder the current Windies Captain may make the reserves...
