FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Grockle 21 June, 2020 14:27
Well here's one.

Warks at home without the first or second string spinner (both called up for international duties)

So RvdM and Ali?

Everyone else is about Murali Vijay not yet available

No one on the injury list.

Does this side pick itself?

Is Lewis Goldsworthy in the squad? Matthew Carter took ten wickets for Notts against us on debut in 2015 at the same age. He hasn't done much since in red ball cricket, but we may only need one performance. Mason Crane took five for Hampshire at Chester le Street on his debut for Hampshire. Matthew Parkinson took six on debut for Lancashire. It does happen.

Apparently Goldsworthy took wickets at a miserly rate for England Under-19s in the winter. It would be quite a gamble, but if Warks have Patel there may be a bit of dust on the pitch before very long, There usually is if he is playing. It would mean two left-armers so not ideal. Azhar performed brilliantly with his leg spin for us in the RLODC Play-off last year but will his bowling hold up over four days? He has a Test match temperament so it may well. He might be the best option, but Goldsworthy might be worth a thought. It is the sort of thing that is inclined to come off. With vdM and Azhar also in the side it would give us something to respond to Patel with and keep us on the offensive, which Championship-chasing sides should be.

Just a thought at the moment.

Farmer

Edit: Had not seen pitch conditions when I wrote that but I would still be inclined to think about Goldsworty, if available. The spinners have been taking a lot of wickets in this fantasy league.

No Goldsworthy I'm afraid

Mike Carberry has 17 wickets with spin

There's a youngster called J Ramshaw - an off spinner who I have never heard of but he has been sent up to the first team from the Academy. No first class record at all

And there's Max.

This is the worst pitch we've seen all season, a bowler's paradise which should deteriorate. Bounce Average and Wear Average, first time there have been 2 average ratings together.

If it means anything, wickets should come easily and to counter this I would like to play an extra batsman in this match. We also have Leach who I suggest should bowl much of the overs, particularly at the end. After his absence, I would expect him to take about half the overall wickets and Gregory maybe 4. Cove and Jove should benefit from the pitch as well.

Given our strong league position and that Warwickshire is the weakest side we are still to face, this is a good opportunity imo for Banton to return. I would also entertain Farmer's suggestion of introducing 1 or 2 players from the seconds, but probably not on this occasion.

Therefore: Ali, Byrom, Bartlett, Hildreth, Abell, Banton, Davies, Gregory, Cove, Jove, Leach

One further issue is the weather on the first day, I would consider asking Warwickshire to bat. if we get them out cheaply and amass a large score, then hopefully our final run chase will be minimal

No Leach SLLL,so RVM obviously in his place

I’m all for playing Ramshaw as a second spinner even at the expense of maybe Ali and let Banton open with Byrom.Think it’s worth a risk and with Ali off soon Banton deserves a chance.Alis average must be under 30 now.
Banton
Byrom
Bartlett
Hildreth
Abell
Davies
Van de Merwe
Gregory
Jove
Cove
Ramshaw

Here are the latest Farmer ramblings:

Not sure about Ramshaw because we know nothing about him whereas we do know something about Goldsworthy, although to a degree the same argument I put in favour of Goldsworthy can be put for Ramshaw, namely the potential impact of debut spinners, and Ramshaw does turn it the opposite way from vdM. So, to that degree I would be tempted. I wouldn't consider Max Waller because he has never developed a stock ball. That could cost dearly in red ball cricket.

I have a question in my mind about Jamie O. How many games on the trot has he had? Does he need a rest? In any event, we will need him fresh for the run in, given we have Yorkshire, Hampshire at Southampton and Essex to come after this, so I would want his firepower for all three of those games.

It goes hard against the grain but I wonder, given the pitch, whether this is one of those rare cases where we should consider a seventh batsman and use Azhar in a different role, namely as an attacking bowler and a specialist batsman against their spinners. He played a brilliant, one of my remember-for-all-time, innings against Ashwin at Taunton last year. That would mean batting him at six and bringing in an opener. I don't like batting people out of position. I am not sure it is often that successful, but this would be for positive reasons and give him the responsibilty for carrying out two key roles, so it just might work here. It might help the team too to know they were going in with an attacking, rather than a defensive, response to the loss of two key players. Assuming the software considers such things.

I undestand the push to bring Banton in, for a number of reasons - that he could turn a low-scoring game in an hour being one - and a bit of me wants to see how the software reads him. If we had the seventh batsman, and Azhar went to six to deal with the spin, he would have to open. However, given Carberry's record in this fantasy stuff before he was injured I wonder if he would be the better bet to open.

Can't make suggestions without at least saying what I would do if the decision were mine, so my team is below. Davey rather than Brooks for Overton as a one-off because with seven batsmen we may need someone who can bowl longish spells. Banton for Carberry I wouldn't argue much against, neither would I argue too strongly against not resting Overton. I would worry a bit more about Ramshaw because, tempting though it is, he is a complete unknown.

So,

Byrom
Carberry
Bartlett
Hildreth
Abell
Azhar
Davies
Gregory
van der Merwe
C Overton
Davey

A risk, but with no Leach or Bess I think a risk of some description or other will have to be taken. Perhaps Craig O above vdM.

I think if it’s going to be a low scoring game iwhere your eventually get a ball that’s too good,a fast scoring batsman like Banton who will attack the spinners might be a better option than Carberry.I would personally leave Ali to open and bat Banton at 7.

Eddie Byrom? Leg Spin?

There is some point in that Nelliec. I think it is probably a case of you pays your money and you takes your choice, and then hope you bought the right choice. Very difficult to cover for both Leach and Bess on what will probably be a turning track.

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
nelliec 22 June, 2020 22:43
So no Bess so options available.
.Just bring in an extra batsman
Replace with an untried spinner or Max who could be expensive.
Add Brooke’s or Davey
Batting wise Banton or Carberry For Ali or Bess.
Personally I would take the safety first option and go in with one spinner plus Ali and Banto

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Somerset LaLaLa 22 June, 2020 23:42
Nelliec, I read that as Warwickshire not having spinners.

No Leach makes the proposition of 4 bowlers a greater risk, but I feel one that is worth taking. Farmer’s idea of bringing back Carberry is really intriguing, but Ali has excelled as opener and I wouldn’t want to change his position. Probably we need to go for Banton, surely he cannot finish the season averaging 10? Other than that Kervezee could come in lower down the order.

It would be a brave decision not to play a spinner and Gregory to me is essential. The point of resting Jove is sensible with Yorkshire, Hampshire and Essex on the horizon. However we need to get the 20 wickets and given that Brooks has taken more than Davey, he gets my nod.

Revised side: Ali, Byrom, Bartlett, Hildreth, Abell, Banton, Davies, Gregory, Cove, vdM, Brooks

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
nelliec 23 June, 2020 08:49
Happy with that.Dont know if SD would be happy dropping to 7 after his 90 in the last game though

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Farmer White 23 June, 2020 11:04
Given without Leach and Bess there is no ideal solution I could live with that. Brooks has proved me wrong more than once this season so, whilst I think Davey would be the safer option Craig O and vdM can both keep it tight and, as SLLL says we do need 20 wickets. A win here would give us aat least a one-game cushion with three to play. Davies, last season at least, showed himself very capable of staying with our lower order while they hit out so may be a better option at seven than Banton who would also have Davies to secure an end.

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Somerset LaLaLa 23 June, 2020 12:01
What do you reckon about us bowling first? It's not often I say that, but look at the weather conditions.

This simulation seems to have very high first innings scores for the side batting first. Can we limit them somehow to 250 and then get 320? A Warwickshire second innings collapse for 100 would leave us needing 30?

That is the thinking anyhow: outscore them with our strength in batting and let the pitch do the rest. Though if we batted first and made 250, then maybe they could collapse first innings?

Another outcome is we get totally hammered for lack of wicket taking... that is what this discussion is about. I call it covering my posterior, others may refer to it as due diligence

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Grockle 23 June, 2020 12:11
I may have to run a poll for batsmen. Hope that Banton would be up and coming by now but unsure that his first class record based on 2019 is that hot

We are still working on our 2020 perceptions versus the 2019 perceptions of the PC to some extent.

The general consensus seems to be to opt for RvdM as the only spinner and not opt for an unknown youngster or Max at first class (history would suggest that the machine would assume he would be expensive - though if it wasn't an important match it might be worth the experiment).

The only 2 questions seem to be

Davey or Brooks - with this pitch I'm not sure I'd personally go with Brooks

Carberry or Banton - extra man at 7 though I would not move Davies from 6 after Yorkshire
I'd also not put Carberry at 7, he would have to open with Ali - meaning moving Eddie to 7!

We could of course go with both Carberry AND Banton offering Carberry as another possible slow man IF the pitch does take spin in the second half.

What are your thought selectors. I'd like to run this game from TOMORROW if possible.

So the question areas as far as I can see

1. Ali
2.??
3. Bartlett
4. Hildreth
5. Abell
6. Davies (wk) or ??
7.?? or Davies (wk)
8. Craig Overton
9. RvdM
10. Jamie Overton
11??

Perm any three from Byrom, Banton, Carberry, Davey, Brooks

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Farmer White 23 June, 2020 13:19
I think after the discussion there is some consensus around which most of us could live:

Ali, Byrom, Bartlett, Hildreth, Abell, Banton, Davies, Gregory, Cove, vdM, Brooks

It isn't ideal, but none of the suggestions are because of the impossibility of replacing Leach and Bess on a pitch that will probably turn. I would be happy with Davies at six or seven. There are arguments either way.

Whatever the team, have a toss, and if we win it then bat. There are only rare occasions when I would insert, and this isn't one of them. If the pitch is going to deteriorate, use the best of it, and get the runs on the board early (Ask WG). Inserting would put huge pressure on our depleted bowling attack, and on our batsmen if Warwickshire got away. Runs on the board would take the pressure off vdM and Azhar and give them time to apply some pressure on batsmen facing the pressure of a decent total on a pitch that is unlikely to improve.

Byrom ,Banton and Brooke’s.
Would also swap Jamie for Gregory (not on your list Grockle)

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Somerset LaLaLa 23 June, 2020 15:11
Bowling selection here for me is on who would take the most wickets. That would be Leach by a mile, so without him I would suggest Gregory as it's a bouncy track and there is lots of cloud forecast for the start of the match. Then probably Brooks. And after that Jove, but I accept he should be rested. vdM on a turning track is the wildcard. A quick look at Wiki says his best first class figures are 4/22

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Warwickshire @ Edgbaston
Grockle 23 June, 2020 16:18
OK

Ali
Byrom
Bartlett
Hildreth
Abell
Davies
Gregory
Banton
RvdM
Overton C
Brooks

Ask for a toss. If we win we bat.

Use Ali if required and Eddie at a push.

I won't drop Steve down or put Tom in front of Lewis based on PC stats in this season.
