Jason Roy has apparently contrived to be dismissed in the very first over of an ODI some 15 times since the 2015 World Cup.

The next highest figure is Martin Guptill....................... a very distant second on, er... 6.

Not impressed with him. Poor shot to get out and those stats just about sum him up. A flashing batsman who occasionally gets lucky.

What a fantastic match this evening, with Ireland the thoroughly deserving winners. Isn't cricket the most glorious sport ever invented!

It certainly is.

Had England batted in a way more befitting of that surface, then the match aggregate may have threatened the record aggregate - which occurred on the occasion of Dale Steyn's Hants debut, when Somerset took him for 80 from 10 overs, on the way to successfully chasing down 356.

You know who England really missed? Liam Plunkett. Those middle overs are often seen as the most supporting of supporting roles as far as a bowling attack is concerned. It's all very well having bowlers who are good with the new ball in the power play, or who can fire in yorkers and slower balls at the death. But Liam Plunket was that rarity, a middle overs specialist who wasn't a spinner and took wickets.

Well it's a good job they don't rate Craig at the moment and would rather go with one Curran or the other

I was at the Hampshire match to which AGod refers. I hadn't intended to go, but my son who lives much further west than I do decided to go and picked me up on the way. Very prescient of him. It turned out to be quite a match. 712 runs from 100 overs decided on the last ball. Edge of the seat would be an understatement.

I was at that game too - one of my favourites.

Does anyone know why Lewis didn't get a game for England in the dead-rubber ODI yesterday? Willey played all the games, as did Mahmood (quite poorly), while Curran was also favoured - why not try Lewis, who's now had yet another cricket-free week.

AGod 05 August, 2020 18:35
Tom Banton just got a specific name-check from Chris Silverwood, for his innings yesterday.

Re: England ODIs
Grockle 05 August, 2020 18:54
I think Lewis was only there Shepton as a 'reserve' for if someone in the squad had to pull out for medical reasons (positive COVID test etc) so he was on call but had to be isolated as well because of the pandemic.

Yes, that's right, I think.

I'm assuming LG will be available for the Northants game in which case he should, surely, come straight into the side for Brooks.

Re: England ODIs
Grockle 06 August, 2020 11:16
A number of players should be up for that game - we should only be missing the spinners because I am assuming jack will be tied up with the Tests even though there seems little chance of him taking part in any game.

Re: England ODIs
AGod 06 August, 2020 11:46
Yes, we'll be down the spinners.

Tom Banton should be back, along with LG.

I guess Tom may replace George, due to concussion issues?

Re: England ODIs

Yep one would expect so.

Someone has to come in for George as I think there is a minimum mandatory 14 day period before he can play after his concussion. Of course, it may take even longer than this.

The first time I saw Mahmood in a Lancashire second-team game and he came in and bowled with this beautifully whippy action, I thought he was going to be marvellous. One of the opposition players volunteered to me at the coffee bar “he’s going to be some bowler “ . However, he’s played so little cricket because of injuries and I am as baffled at the England set up’s over assessment of him as I am of their assessment of Jos Buttler in Tests.

Re: England ODIs
AGod 06 August, 2020 22:02
I don't think I've seen anything very much of him. But I'd like to think that he is, at least, a more reliable bowler than the last Lancs paceman with that surname?

And we had the 'first one' here on loan if I recall correctly.

Indeed, I think we did. Not a very inspired decision.
