Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Mike TA1 27 September, 2018 21:16
Colin Graves, the ECB chairman, was forced to abandon plans to present the County Championship trophy after a tense meeting with the chairmen of the first-class counties.

another suggesting Graves was either too angry or too nervous about the reception he may receive from county supporters to appear at the event.

Good news week.

Oh dear.

How sad.

Never mind.

It begs the question - Why didn't the County Chairmen have the sphericals to stand up to Graves before?

Too little - too late?

So the ‘Hundred’ isn’t going to deliver the much promised milk and honey that Counties (including SCCC) foolishly allowed themselves to be bribed with ?

What a surprise.

Does Mr Graves ever show his face at a County Championship game these days ?

Can’t imagine he’d receive a very rapturous reception.

He doesn't seem like a happy man content with his lot in life does he?

Tweet from Aggers:

@Aggerscricket

Message to @ECB_cricket. There’s nothing wrong with any of the cricket we play. But the timing of it, and the priority (!) given to championship cricket is potentially disastrous. We don’t need gimmicks. We don’t need more. Just an intelligent approach to what we have. Thanks.

Well said Aggers.

So lets make Aggers Chairman of the ECB!!
Anybody from Yorkshire should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for ever inflicting Graves on us all. Perhaps there is still time to abandon the so-called 100 ball game and bring in a version of the Wombles at lunchtime in every county and test match in future to entertain the mums and kids - the kids will probably still prefer to play their own game behind the cricket stands!

He only stayed for the first 200 balls at the Oval, having difficulty understanding what was going on, believing the rest of the game would be dull

Seems less and less people are under the Graves umbrella these days.

Never did hear the outcome of the George Dobell and Graves dispute many months ago.

Another trick missed: the obvious candidate for presenting the CC trophy yesterday was a man totally committed to county championship cricket, a playing member of the csounty that won the math though not actually taking part in it. I think Surrey's highly deserving players would have felt highly honoured to have been given their award by Alastair Cook.

I still feel incensed that the sycophants at Somerset invited him to officially open the Somerset Pavilion last year, after the deplorable display that both he and Mr. Harrison gave to members of the club earlier.

There are a number of people with genuine Somerset connections who should have found favour in preference to a man of Yorkshire.

There was a huge row, Roger I, over the decision by the ECB to finance Graves`s libel action against George Dobell, despite Graves being a multi-millonaire.

Nothing has been heard since, so the matter may have been dropped. On the other hand, libel action can well take up to two or three years to reach the courts.

Could someone let Mr G know that I'd be very happy to represent him pro bono (and ensure that he loses his case and has to meet all costs).

Thank you CJM, perhaps Graves decided not to proceed as it might affect his popularity amongst the cricketing fraternity.(Sm102) (Sm128)

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
cricketjerry-mouse 28 September, 2018 12:48
The other totally predictable downside to emerge from yesterday`s meeting of county chairmen is the initial cost of staging The Hundred more than trebling from £13 million to £40 million.

So, as some of us have predicted right from the start, the £1.3 million bonus, used in an attempt to bribe each county into acceptance, is just pie in the sky.

And all this is completely divorced from the reality that we shall be one year out of the EU by then. Even the most ardent of Brexiteers is now admitting their will be a major fall in disposable income at least for the first few years.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Grockle 28 September, 2018 14:17
Get ready for it to double again once the thing starts to 'tank' after 2020.

I have little doubt it will be a sea anchor around the neck of domestic cricket because I see no chance of the governing body admitting it was a mistake and stopping it before it starts or closing it down once it starts to show it was a white elephant in the first place.

I wonder why predicted profits are down: the dawning recognition nobody is going to watch this unwanted abomination?

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Clarence Parker 30 September, 2018 17:46
Right from the start it was perceived by the ECB that the "abomination" would not show a profit for the first 2 or 3 years.

Absolutely farcical!

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
sandhills 30 September, 2018 19:35
The big bash in Aus didnt make cent for 6 years, it's by design, our 100 will not either by design.. The ECB had 70 million in reserves only two years ago, today it's less than 10 million. That's the real question our Chairman and others should be asking , where has 60 million gone! Nash was our Chairman, shame he couldn't stick around and fight for our club on the inside.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Grockle 01 October, 2018 02:25
Well at 1.3m per county plus the extra bits they've paid some Test venues not to compete for Internationals there's about 25 of it.

But you are right when you question where the rest is.... if the setup for the Hundred is going to cost 40m then you can probably send another 15m that way this year in prep etc.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Bagpuss 01 October, 2018 16:06
According to Mike Atherton's Times article the new costing of £41m does not include the £1.3m payment promised to each county. Nor does it include the cost of setting up the women's version which is to replace the Kia Super League, estimated at a further £7m.

It's going to be over £70m in the end. Or let's round it up to £100m; a number we can all understand far more easily.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Railboy 01 October, 2018 17:33
Surely the whole thing has to be reconsidered. Chairmen were lured into voting for this based on a load of false figures and promises ( sounds very familiar) and now that the whole horrible truth is becoming apparent they must surely realise they have been duped. How do we the fans register our vote of no confidence in the administration of our game?

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Grockle 01 October, 2018 21:59
We tried that through our county chair but were ignored. Or at least not consulted properly.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Clarence Parker 01 October, 2018 22:15
I can't foresee the County Chairmen doing an about - face and demanding that the whole circus be abandoned or even postponed, in view of them having voted for it not so long ago.

There is no way they will want to 'lose face'.

For those who didn't get around to listen to Andrew Cornish & Andy Hurry on BBC Somerset.

I don't know if this link works for everybody, I had to log in first. [www.bbc.co.uk]

Andrew Cornish view on the 100 is about 37 minutes into the program.

Make your own minds up about what he said about it.

Try this link if the above doesn't work by typing Andrew Cornish into the iplayer search. [www.bbc.co.uk]

The absence of a vote of no confidence in CG’s leadership is what puzzles me.

What is the case for him remaining in his post ? Why do we not hear a clear vision as to the future of first class cricket in England ?

Presumably some must see merits in his abilities and vision to turn things around.

Whatever his talents, they appear remarkably well hidden.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
cricketjerry-mouse 02 October, 2018 09:06
Michael Atherton is completely deluded if he still believes the ECB will pay each county £1.3 million from the Hundred television fee.

It will never happen. The sports sponsorship money tree is being severely pruned.

One year ago, Rugby`s Six Nations turned down a sponsorship offer of £14 million a year from RBS because Scotland and Wales wanted more.

Now the negotiating figure for this year`s matches has dropped dramatically to around £6 million, despite tournament organisers talking to more than 100 multi-nationals in an attempt to arrive somewhere near RBS`s original £14 million.

And all this at a time when business leaders are tightening every possible belt in order to survive the Brexit financial downturn.

Re: Colin Graves, the ECB chairman
Bagpuss 02 October, 2018 09:42
They *might* still pay up the £1.3m. But if the do I fully expect the current county payments to be dramatically cut.
