I see the pre-match soccer kickabout has claimed yet another victim!

Birmingham Bears` Australian all-rounder Ashton Agar injured an ankle in this mad pursuit and is out for the rest of the T20 - replaced by Sydney Thunders` Chris Green, flown in today from yet another 20/20 tournament in Canada.

Ian Bell, who had hoped to have recovered from a pre-season toe injury in time to play for Warwickshire against Somerset at Edgbaston on August 18-21, now looks highly unlikely to make it. He has been told that another injury playing for the Seconds - this time to his knee - requires a course of injections.

I was told by a friend. the other day, that he's now out for the season. I haven't attempted to verify.

I thought about putting this on the 100 thread.

The ECB is considering postponing the start date of some England player central contracts, though it has denied that is because it is facing cash-flow difficulties. [www.espncricinfo.com]

I saw a report on BBC Sport website a week or so ago, that Bell was out for the season due to a knee injury.

Sad to read of the death of Malcolm Nash and that he will be remembered less for being an excellent one-county pro and more for six balls he bowled on one Swansea afternoon.
And of course we shall remember here that he was educated in Somerset.

Agreed LOl ; close to 1000 wickets. Was also hit for 5 6s and a 4 in an over by Frank Hayes but was a damned good cricketer. Suspect he may have been the leading wicket taker in their championship year of 69

Nash was indeed the leading wicket taker for Glamorgan in their championship winning season of 1969, with 71. Next were Cordle and Williams, each with 52. He was indeed a very good county player.

Thanks for the link Mike.

Reading GD's observations, you really do get the feeling that he believes the ECB's finances are under pressure. To reduce reserves by around 60 million quid in three years is quite an achievement !

Never mind asking them how they plan to capitalise on a World Cup win, the parliamentary DCMS committee ought to be asking Graves and Harrison how something north of £20m/year has disappeared from the ECB coffers since 2016.

Tom Harrison's pay rise, Colin's pay off to Cardiff, market researchers, focus groups, logo designers, a Mumsnet subscription and a herd of unicorns.

Very sad news of somebody dying doing something he loved.

A cricket umpire has died, one month after being hit on the head by a ball during an amateur match.
John Williams, 80, from Hundleton, Pembrokeshire, was flown to hospital after being struck with the ball during a match on 13 July.
He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he was placed in an induced coma.
On 1 August, he was transferred to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, but died two weeks later.

Or maybe “the way he would have wanted to go” as sometimes is said. Deaths aren’t always “very sad news”

Clarence Parker 16 August, 2019 10:54
But please in the name of compassion, spare a thought for his wife and family who no doubt spent 4 weeks of anguish and hurt around his hospital bedside before his eventual passing.

May he rest in peace.

How much longer will grumpy Fraser keep his job, one wonders?

75 all out, at Hove, today.

Ever since the day when he moaned about the Taunton pitch, Middx seem to have been utter rubbish with the bat.

Hameed being released by Lancashire at end of season. Maybe worth a punt?

Re: 2019 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Loyal of Lhasa 23 August, 2019 12:02
That's very sad news about Hameed. I imagine that a 2nd Div side might be very happy to recruit him, but we should focus on the players we already have.

Anyone but a specialist opener, I would agree LoL. However we are currently over-endowed with talented 4/5s and distinctly short of openers.
I would not be at all surprised to see Tom B in the national one-day line-up within a year which would deprive us of one option (one we have not so far exercised in the long game, I know, but still an option). Hameed on board might give us more flexibility in our search for an overseas, rather than limiting us to a top-three batsman as the only option.

Angell Face 23 August, 2019 14:09
Sorry mikeindex, but if he's not good enough for Lancashire he's not good enough for Somerset.

Re: 2019 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Grockle 23 August, 2019 14:24
We are still looking for possible places for Eddie Byrom, Tom Lammonby, Ben Green, young Smeed quite soon and Mr Rouse who seems to be making a claim as well. I wonder if any of them are opener material? James H may be considering more than just moving back to 4! A wealth of talent even if it doesn't all make the grade!!

And 3 years ago there was talk of Hameed and Tom Abell as possible future England openers.

Who knows he is young enough and a change of County might change his fortune.

I think it could be good for him Roger. Allott produced an appalling piece of man management with him earlier in the year in saying that Hameed was hanging on by his fingernails to his Lancashire contract ; how to humiliate a player in public. Allott has all the man management skills of Attila the Hun and one of the lighter moment at Colwyn Bay the other day was when a chair collapsed under him on the balcony. One wag near me shouted “throw him out”. The joke “ Why do people take an
instant dislike to me?”
“ It saves time” could have been invented about Allott

Mark Chilton the assistant to the head coach admitted when Hameed was successful that he had never been able to teach him anything. I’m sure he’s been equally useless during his struggling period.

Re: 2019 OTHER CRICKET NEWS

I didn't see the Allott quote at the time. That really is outrageous.

Just has no class at all Mike. When Jordan Clark left last year he said” I wish him luck at Surrey. He’ll need it”

Re: 2019 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
AGod 24 August, 2019 05:31
Couldn’t Chilton’s quote be equally read to imply that Hameed ‘doesn’t take coaching’?

Anyway, I agree with Mikeindex and Roger. Somerset are hardly so well-endowed with top three options that we can afford to dismiss possibilities on the grounds that ‘not good enough for x, can’t be good enough for us.’

And that’s especially true when none of our younger options have been deemed, by management, to be worthy of a top three place this season, despite the serial struggles of experienced players - Tres and Az have had awful times, Hildreth an unproductive one. Steve Davies is the only experienced player to have succeeded up there and he’s only played once and, according to WSM, will now be returned to the middle-order.

Re: 2019 OTHER CRICKET NEWS

Sounds like there might be a nightmare, Richard Williams style, father-cum-coach in the background. But maybe HH doesn’t have the mental strength for dealing with said nightmare that Venus and Serena have shown?

Perhaps any county that takes HH on would be well-advised to make any contract offer conditional on the fact that all coaching of HH should, in future, be done by properly qualified cricket coaches and not a father masquerading as such?

Yes, that possibility about what Chilton said did occur to me. However, it was said after Hameed’s phenomally successful first full season and I’m pretty sure that what he meant was that HH was the finished article at an incredibly young age. His dad didn’t seem to have done a bad job in getting him there. His decline seemed to start when Lancashire started playing him in one day cricket after which he seemed to lose his incredibly well developed ability to leave the ball.

This was the actual Allott quote ““He’s got six months left on a contract,” says Allott, “and he’s not scored a run for two years. Not only is he a million miles away from England, he’s hanging on by his fingertips at Lancashire.”
