AGod mentioned in an earlier post how momentum was important and how, a good bowling performance might lead to a good batting innings.
It would seem that a certain Mr Gregory was listening.

Broad being treated with complete, total and utter disdain having gone into his mindless "England enforcer," mode (which never works for England either!).

Great to see!! Great knock from LG.

Josh Davey taking on Broad and winning 28 off 27 while Lewis stomps on with 50 off 49. Great I can stream this though nothing else is getting done and I'm blaming 'jet lag'.

Simply wonderful day for George Bartlett. I have always felt he had plenty of potential and he has now turned it into reality. Am sure he will be chuffed as old boots tonight.

Also thrilled for Tom and Lewis. CJ-M made reference to last seasons doubters re the latter and I admit that (pre new contract signature), I was one of them, so I’m very happy to eat humble pie.

Not sure how the top order is going to work out, but it’s tremendous to see such middle order perform so well.

It's now looking as if we shall probably bowl a few overs this evening - a few wickets would put a huge smile on my face.

It is well known (or at least widely believed - I suspect that there may be no statistical back up for this) that it seems that, when an all-rounder goes well in one suit in a given match, it often boosts the other suit. Didn't work for LG in game one, but I have the feeling that - if we are to get up, around, and preferably past the Notts total, we shall need some good runs from LG today so it is to be hoped that this idea will be in effect

Well called and another bonus point

If we go on like this we might just avoid relegation!

And just for good measure, Tom Banton hit 100 off just 76 balls, and Dom Bess took 4-31, as the Seconds raced to victory over their Worcestershire counterparts in just 28 overs in a 50-overs match at Taunton Vale today.

Cricinfo has the slightly strange habit of giving county championship tables half way through four-day matches.

Somerset currently leading the way with 27 points, two ahead of Hants, 10 of Notts, 14 of the Yorkies, 18 of Kent, 23 of one-match Surrey, 23 of Essex and 25 of one-match Warwickshire.

What a fantastic day! Certainly didn’t see that coming given our batting frailties. Delighted for George Bartlett who is now turning the potential I thought he always had into reality. He has grabbed his opportunity with both hands especially after not being named in the original 13 man squad for opening game. Massive credit where it’s due.

Pleased to see Tom get that big score after giving his wicket away cheaply twice during Kent game having got a start in both innings. He has played well thus far this season and today will give him so much confidence. As for LG superb again playing his natural game with the bat to guide us to maximum batting points.

Two early wickets in Notts 2nd innings has capped off what has been a great day for the team. No let up now and hopefully finish the job tomorrow. Won’t be easy, but have every confidence in our bowling attack. Will be interesting to see if Leach has a role to play tomorrow.

Obviously a very good day for Somerset, regardless of what happens in the rest of the match. But it does make me wonder why nobody took a punt on Gregory in the IPL. Okay, I know it's a whole different kettle of fish, but he seems to cope with pressure well and considering his performances at the end of last season and the beginning of this, he might have been a bargain for somebody for his efforts with both ball and bat.

I always start the season hoping to avoid relegation (call me a pessimist) but this season I'm actually starting with a positive air.

(I won't be able to follow the cricket for much of tomorrow - supporting Bath Rugby at Gloucester, in a sponsor's box, but I'm quietly positive. I'd certainly much rather be in Somerset's shoes than Nottingham's.)

I guess it just shows how strong the England one day side is that Gregory hasn’t had a sniff of that either. He’s unlucky in some respects there although you can’t really argue against the players who have been playing

I think it would be realistic to say that we, arguably, start the day today with the same sort of feeling with which Notts might have started the day yesterday... They'd have been thinking, 2 or 3 wkts in the first hour, and the heavy lifting may be all but done ... we will surely be thinking the same, albeit that the presence of Fletcher means that, for us, we might not think that until we have 3 wkts (assuming he is one of them).

I do think it flattened out into a pretty good batting track yesterday, and pretty slow, too. So I think it will be some hard yakka. I want to get the final 8 wkts for the addition of no more than another 240 or so runs, and I expect Leachy to need to do quite a bit of bowling.

Thank you for warming the cockles of our hearts, it is excellent to get the view from inside the ground. The first round Notts v Yorks game seemed to descend into a flat batting track, with not much on offer for the bowlers (or spectators) by day 4. My fear was that this pitch would be prepared the same, given our seam attack, and was not entirely convinced in the uncontested toss. However, apart from Broad their bowlers did appear rather toothless. Today will tell, I'm rather confident and feel Tom is going to bowl a few. It will also be interesting what Lewis continues to achieve with the world cup round the corner

And it took the GREAT Matthew Jack Leach all of 6 balls to get rid of Slater.

I should like to add:

For any spinner, the ideal scenario would be a fast, bouncy pitch taking some considerable turn on a consistent basis.

But the second best scenario would be a track of any type on which some balls are turning, and some not. On the evidence of Jack's first over, we may have just such as second best scenario on our hands here..

Dame Fortune is a mischievous mistress... As I recall, Bartlett was dropped very early in his second innings against Kent (thanks Renshaw!). Had that catch been held he would not have gone on to score a fifty and would probably have been dropped for the current match. I wonder what Byrom thinks about that.

I'm sure Eddie will reflect that he has, in past, got to the odd 70 or 80, but not yet gone on. He will be even more determined to do so, in the future, one imagines than in the past.

(But I know what you mean).
