Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
Somerset LaLaLa 18 June, 2019 09:18
No prizes! Enter as many times as you like! Closest selection wins!

I'll go for something a bit different, Davies to open with Abell lower down, the wicket taking seamers and spin twins

Davies
Azhar
Hildreth
Banton
Abell
Bartlett
Gregory
Bess
Cove
Leach
Brooks

Team I’d like:

Byrom
Abell
Bartlett
Hildreth
Banton
Davies
LG
Cove
Dom
Jove
Leachy.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex

Team we’ll probably get:

Unchanged from last match, both in personnel and batting order.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
Somerset LaLaLa 18 June, 2019 10:13
Which was:

Azhar
Abell
Hildreth
Banton
Bartlett
Davies
Gregory
Cove
Jove
Leach
Brooks

Is Byrom and Abell our best opening pair? Would Byrom make more runs than Azhar there?

Apart from a 313 against Kent, CC1 scores at Chelmsford have been on the low side this season, every run could be at a premium

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 18 June, 2019 10:58
They should all play in the seconds game this week - Eddie, Azhar and Tres. See who can find some form.

Leachy and Dom could probably both use the outing too - to keep a bit of momentum going in the latter case and due to a lack of bowling in Leachy’s case.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 18 June, 2019 11:06
But only Eddie and Marcus are playing, meaning Azhar will just be carrying forward the same lack of form into the next game.

Josh Davey has taken a wicket at Southgate if that helps the 1st xi selection

Feed is rather good - can see the entire slip cordon (of which we currently have four).

On the basis that Cove needs some recovery time, and that Byrom has proven to have stickability in the past, plus Abell can be the third seamer, and assuming it is a turning track as it was v Hants:
Byrom
Azhar
Abell
Hildreth
Banton
Bartlett
Davies
LG
Dom
Jove
Leach

If they prepare a flat track at Chelmsford (doesn't it always turn after a couple of days there though?) then I would puts Brooks in for Dom:
Byrom
Azhar
Abell
Hildreth
Banton
Bartlett
Davies
LG
Jove
Leach
Brooks

I don't envy the selectors for this one - I hope they can get a good look at the pitch and the one just used v Hants before they have to choose

Edit … and then there's Josh who has been bowling really well too, what a dilemma

Same line up as Angell Face's (except Banton in place of Byrom). If it is an absolute turner, then he can offer a 3rd spin option.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 18 June, 2019 11:50
You’d drop Banton, AF?

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 18 June, 2019 12:02
Seconds all over Middx. Wonder what grumpy Gus will have to say re:pitch?

Tom L first change and early wkt.

It is to be hoped that there may be considerable scope, in future, to have both Leachy and Bess in our team, with 3 main seamers and the two Toms serving as seamer 4a and 4b, respectively. You’d have LG, twins and spin twins as 7-11, and both Toms in the top 6.

Devil of a selection.
I want Byrom opening - but who opens with him, and whom do you drop?
I want two spinners, but who drops out for Dom?
With deep reluctance, and apologies to those omitted:
Byrom
Azhar
Bartlett
Hildreth
*Abell
+Banton/Davies (sorry, this one is beyond me)
Gregory
Bess
Overton
Overton
Leach

We're actually in the position of national selectors, who have candidates galore and have to decide who of a dozen might best fill the last two or three places.

1) Azhar
2) Banton
3) Davies
4) Hildreth
5) Abell
6) Bartlett
7) Gregory
8) Bess (or Jove if strip isn’t overly spin friendly)
9) Cove
10) Leach
11) Brooks

Davies and Bartlett interchangeable at 3 & 6.

Azhar

George

Lewis

Jamie

I agree with the idea it's correct to blood our younger batters at 4 & 5 to help them bed in.

We have 4 matches in 24 days so i really am not against rotating any of the bowling attack.
It should not be viewed as dropped but rested.
We need everyone fit for this busy period.

I'm sure Lewis or Craig will not want to be left out but maybe in the 2 home games rest 1 from each.
Both along with Jamie in expect to be ahead of Josh Tim Brooks when it comes to T20s too so a lot of cricket in the next 9/10 weeks befor the HUGE final run in.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 18 June, 2019 16:40
I think Meeks played the T20s last year, so may factor in. And J Taylor sure to factor in.

But I agree LG and Cove candidates to be rested for one home CC match apiece.

The Abell, Azhar, Hildy combo only made 3 in the first innings against Kent. Davies made 41 and 30 opening at Chelmsford last year. In fact the Byrom, Davies, Bartlett, Hildreth, Abell order did rather well. I think we might be regressing with Abell as opener and not playing Azhar would make for an expensive drinks carrier

Meeks didnt play any T20 last year.
He was chief cheerleader in the Somerset stand.....

Davey played just 1 T20 as did Craig and none for Timmy G. The latter 2 largely due to injury.

Lewis & Jerome along with Babar the 1st 3 names on the teamsheet being skipper & overseas buy ins.
Jamie was our standout wicket taker last year so with Max & RVDM too we shall have lots of competition for bowling spots.....

I think it all depends on the weather.Cloudy and drizzly I expect us to insert and play the extra seamer.Sunny then hopefully win toss and play two spinners.
I think if we bowl first we’d be looking at ripping through them and then bat only once.
I honestly can’t see AH and JK throwing another youngster in the side straightaway

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex

From the Essex website yesterday,

"Essex bowler Sam Cook, who left the field during Hampshire’s second innings on Monday, has sustained a side injury.

Four balls into his second over, the 21-year-old pulled up and had to leave the field, with Simon Harmer bowling the two remaining deliveries.

Cook is to undergo a scan later today to discover the full extent of the injury."

This will greatly weaken Essex's attack next week one would assume

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 19 June, 2019 10:27
Depends on status of Siddle, Quinn etc. Cook’s seasonal average has been dismal (37)

The weather forecast has given me pause for thought.

It’s suggesting hot and humid weather. So one would expect swing (although also, perhaps, an increased chance of the track breaking up).

It's tricky this selection when the weather gets in the way. Still a few days to go.😁

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
Angell Face 19 June, 2019 12:19
A God - re your post 18/6 11.50, I gave it some thought before picking Byrom in place of Banton. I saw Byrom play a couple of gutsy innings last year and while I acknowledge that he hasn't been a prolific run scorer he doesn't give his wicket away. I became a bit of a fan. Banton is a great talent but for the moment we need at least one opening bat who is still there after 20 overs even if he's only scored 20 runs! However, since I know the square root of not very much compared with Messrs. Hurry and Kerr, I shall be quite happy if they select Banton.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 19 June, 2019 13:09
I am a fan of both young players. I concur with Byrom up top, but also see Banton as something of a trump card in the middle-order at the meeting moment.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
Slow Left Chinaman 19 June, 2019 17:43
I still don't understand the clamour to bring in Byrom (CC average of 20 last year) rather than backing Azhar to revert to his mean and start scoring runs.

So for me it's either the same team as last game, or if it's a rank turner then Bess in for Jove/Brooks (probably replacing Jove).

I'd like to see an actual analysis of whether or not "form" actually exists in cricket, or if it's just us false pattern spotting.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
AGod 19 June, 2019 18:48
Of course form exists. If you want to see it as a deviation from the mean then fine, but bear in mind that players don’t necessarily revert to a mean over a short time-scale. For example, a batsman with six seasons in the book, averaging 40 might have two down years in a row, averaging only 25, then follow that with one season averaging 50, and one 60.

Azhar is likely to revert to the mean but the time-scale in which he will do so is entirely uncertain.

Re: Pick Your Own - Selection Against Essex
Nailsea_Fizz 19 June, 2019 19:07
SLC - I get the impression there is a preference for the youngsters coming through at the moment to be moved into the team and when a drop in form occurs by those in possession the clamour grows.
