And young Mason Crane slips down the pecking list.

Really can’t see the point of this signing, especially considering the months the CC will be played in. Hampshire need a batsman not a bowler!

Nottinghamshire have signed batsman Haseeb Hameed on a two-year contract after he was released by Lancashire.

I wonder if the Club had any thoughts on signing him, but probably he was looking to stay North anyway.

And Jake Libby left for Worcestershire to make way for him

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
cricketjerry-mouse 15 November, 2019 08:13
Jake Libby is Devon-born and Cardiff-educated, so he is more likely to have come south westward than Hameed.

Looks like the end of uncontested tosses (see point 7):

First impressions of the RLODC group is it looks good for us, though Notts away tricky.

However, we meet Essex, Surrey and Hants twice in CC1. They play eachother once...

Gotta beat who we face. An unfair aystem is what we have but we have to get on with the@#$%&they give us unfortunately.

Don't worry, if we do well they'll throw in the 12 penLty points.

All uphill from here people.. Just gotta not let the @#$%& grind us down..

Garbage stinks and cream rises to the top.

Apparently teams are organised according to the 2019 finishing positions (Essex 1 to Glocs 10) and divided into adjacent pairs e.g. Essex and Somerset. Each team plays the side in its pair twice and a side in each of the other pairs twice. The other sides it plays once.

Our recent execrable games were Surrey away 2018, Hampshire away 2018, Essex away 2019 and Hampshire away 2019. We have come off badly from this and it would be more even to play every side twice

I would like to think the decision as to which of each pair a team plays twice, and which once, is either decided by a random draw, or by a pre-ordained numeric formula...

Here is an explanation that is on a Hampshire Cricket Blog I follow

Bagpuss, the formula uses the Harrison-Graves modification to discard the outliers

I believe the method was based on the same strategy adopted by Dermot Reeve re SCCC's one day batting order when he was in charge at Taunton..........,

i.e. make it up as you go along !

And not the only thing that could bankrupt the Game and the ECB.

Daily Telegraph Article.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Bagpuss 18 December, 2019 06:50
Confirmation from the ECB that the no-toss rule in the County Championship is being scrapped for next season.

The other significant rule change affects T20/50 over cricket - the 6 runs per over penalty for slow over rate goes, in its place the fielding team is permitted one fewer fielders outside the ring for any balls/overs remaining after the cut off point.

There are some other rule changes for the 💯 but that's not "cricket" news...

So no Banton for April & May.
Also missing 5 weeks July/Aug.
That's without any possible lions or odi/T20 call ups.
Not to mention any other franchise that may come calling.....

I make it we now have just the 6 senior batters left to fill presumably 6 batting spaces.
Young Green Goldsworthy the next in line i guess.

Add to that no Timmy G & now no control over Craig.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
RadstockRob 20 December, 2019 04:04
We don't need six batters when we've got James Hildretg.
Only needs another but stand at the other end and block the occasional last ball of the over.

SOMERSET THE TEAM TO WATCH.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS

We've rarely had more than 2 provide any significant score in a game anyway for a number of years!

It's a young players' dream at the same time as it creates pessimism about the future. Lots of early opportunity. Let's hope there are a few more who want to follow Tom Banton but not too quuckly.

They certainly won't be kicking their heels at Taunton Deane

I guess that's the exciting part to see the young ones come through.

However, it will be a big ask I think and with a points deduction and all the other distractions we will do well to stay where we are.

Vernon Philander announces he is retiring from international cricket following South Africa's Test series against England.

Surrey must be in need of another bowler.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Bagpuss 23 December, 2019 23:35
.....although if the Daily Mail are to be believed (!) Somerset are leading the chase to sign him.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Grockle 24 December, 2019 00:41
Well we didn't get our share of him when he was in demand (and semi fit). He'd be an interesting addition.

Snap him up!

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Tom Seymour 24 December, 2019 12:33
Snap him up as what?

A second overseas player for when Wade has gone home? Could we sign him as a Kolpak as he has announced his retirement from International cricket, or as we will be non members of the EEC, has that option been scuppered?

When he was last here for us, he was curtailed from bowling as flat out as he was able, or for as long as he was able, on account of the stipulations laid down by the SACB.

Character and commitment are essential in any overseas star, so I would tread carefully on this one for what it is worth.

A glass half - empty or a glass half - full?
Regardless, both glasses need filling up.

Re: 2020 OTHER CRICKET NEWS
Grockle 24 December, 2019 13:12
The kolpak issue will return after 31 January but probably won't be an issue for the summer of 2020 as further Brexit negotiation will take most of the next 12 months it seems.
