Overseas Player Announcement
Cleavo 22 December, 2019 20:31
Club have tweeted this evening to say that they shall be announcing overseas signing tomorrow morning at 8:30am.

Any ideas? Babar Azam is the obvious one until Pakistan’s tour of England begins.

One other name apparently we have been linked with is Aussie Callum Ferguson and he would be available for most if not the whole season I believe.

Jerome Taylor or Azhar Ali apparently.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Cleavo 22 December, 2019 21:35
Hope not WSM, would prefer Babar over Azhar. As for Jerome would like to think management are looking elsewhere for T20 overseas options. Perhaps get Corey back fitness and availability permitting?

Dale Steyn another rumour doing the rounds.

Jerome cooked his goose last season surely?

AN Overseas, so could be C.C or One Day player.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Grockle 22 December, 2019 22:27
It will probably be a T20 player rather than the long term option. Azhar might come back into form but I'd also rather have Babar.

Jerome showed very little to look forward to last season. I doubt things will have improved.

Matthew Wade. First 7 matches of CC.

Well I didn't see that coming.

I assume he will bat at 3?
Hildy HAS to go back to 4.
So with George & SD 5 and 6 plus 1 or 2 games from Banton maybe come September our red ball void is in the top 3.....

Impressive signing though, proper fiesty, annoying, vocal, nasty fighter of a player too. Fine on my side, right pain in the a%÷# on the opposition

Despite what you say about Webb, wsm, I hope he does well for us!!

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Bagpuss 23 December, 2019 09:07
Bats 4 for Tasmania. Could he bat that high, or even 3, against moving ball in April? I need convincing. And wsm are you assuming the skip opens? I still feel Tom is better down in the middle order.

Good news for Eddie B though.

Somerset LaLaLa 23 December, 2019 09:16
Didn't expect that, really exciting after the Ashes summer, he batted a lot lower down then - 5/6 I believe

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
nelliec 23 December, 2019 10:32
Good signing in my opinion
My top 6 would be
Byrom
Abell
Bartlett
Hildreth
Wade
Davies

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Grockle 23 December, 2019 12:17
Bit of a suprise but a fighter. Aussies deal with the moving ball better than sun continentals in the Spring so I'm happy with this. Tasmsnian. We loke Tasmanians!!

Sounds a promising signing.

An intriguing signing which should bolster our fragile batting line up.

Agree with Bagpuss re Tom A., but he continues to mature so I guess can bat pretty well any position as needed.

By all accounts MW is a pretty strident character, so I imagine his relationship with colleagues and opponents alike could be ‘lively’ at times. Certainly how he inter relates with and supports Tom A. will be interesting.

Overall, methinks this has to be good news.

A bit of spine would be very welcome. Langer had some fire and that seemed OK (except for Blackie of course).

Officially announced by the club now.Vernon Philander will be available in all formats next seasonThe seam department suddenly looks very potent.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement

Lets hope Colin Graves and his mates at the ECB do not put a block on V.P. playing for us.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Grizzers 28 December, 2019 16:28
This has to be excellent news, so well done all at SCCC for securing his services.

Sounds like Nasser & co. jumped the gun somewhat by announcing things ahead of all the paperwork etc. being completed, so let's hope there aren't any last minute glitches with the formalities.

Grizzers.

Philander Agrees Personal Terms

Somerset County Cricket Club are today able to officially confirm that we have agreed personal terms with Vernon Philander for him to become a Somerset player in 2020.

The Club will now be working through all of the necessary processes with the ECB in order to be able to register him as a Kolpak player once the current South Africa versus England Test series has been completed.

It has been widely reported over the last few days that the South African would be joining the County, but the official paperwork required to complete the deal is being finalised with the ECB, with the Club working towards the full procedure being completed successfully in the New Year.

The 34-year-old, who would be available to play in all formats of the game for the County, is no stranger to Somerset having represented the Club in 2012. During his five-match stint seven years ago he claimed 23 wickets at an average of 21.43 with a best of five for 43 against Middlesex.

Philander recently announced his intention to retire from international cricket after the current series with England. Since making his international debut in 2007, he has represented South Africa on more than 90 occasions across all formats, claiming over 260 wickets and scoring over 1700 runs.

In Test cricket he has claimed 216 wickets at an average of 22.16 and he reached the 50-wicket mark after only seven matches.

Somerset Director for Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “Vernon is undoubtedly a genuinely world class performer and we are delighted to have agreed terms with such a talented player.

“When the possibility of signing him presented itself, and considering the challenges that we feel lie ahead of us with regards to achieving our aspirations, we felt that it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“To put it simply, he is one of the very best bowlers in the game and he would add quality to any team in the world. His experience and knowledge of the game will also be of huge benefit to our bowling group, especially the young players looking to break in to the First XI.

“When we consider the development that a number of our senior bowlers have made in recent years, and the number of those bowlers who are now playing international cricket or on the cusp of playing International cricket, it is vital for us as a Club to ensure that we have the quality and depth in our squad to fulfil our aims of winning silverware in all three formats.

“The addition of Vernon to our bowling unit will enable us to continue to manage the workloads of all of our quality seamers through the demands of a full and demanding season even more effectively.

“As a Club, our procedures usually dictate that we only comment on player acquisitions when the deal is finalised. However, this story has been circulating through various outlets over the last few days and we feel that it is important that our Members and supporters receive information on such speculation through the official channels.”

Vernon Philander said: “I’m really pleased to have agreed personal terms with Somerset. It’s a great Club and I really enjoyed my time there a few years ago.

“I know that they won the 50-over cup last year and came close in the Championship and hopefully I’ll be able to help them to another successful year in 2020. Right now, I am 100% focussed on the series against England and then my focus will turn to my next chapter.”

Was a good player when he was here in 2012 and he is a better player now. A very good signing. Pleased with this.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
cricketjerry-mouse 29 December, 2019 12:11
The ECB are considering allowing two overseas players per county from 2021 to compensate for the end of Kolpak registrations once the UK leaves the EU. Kolpaks will be bona fide this season, as long as they are signed up before January 31.

This may be why the Vernon Philander signing will initially be for one year only. He will be a Kolpak in 2020, but if both sides hit it off with each other this summer, he could be one of Somerset`s two overseas players in 2021.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Railboy 02 January, 2020 12:10
Interesting CJM, I hadn’t seen that. Will players currently engaged as Kolpaks be allowed to continue after the end of this season I wonder?
I would like to see the overseas player restriction apply to just two players per season. I hate the trend of signing a player for 2 or 3 games, then signing another, and then another ( whilst fully accepting that we are major culprits).

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Grockle 02 January, 2020 13:57
It seems there is no problem for this season if kolpaks are signed pre 31 January. Somerset's yaer by year plan makes sense then.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
nelliec 02 January, 2020 21:38
I would have thought a contract is a contract and players signed as a kolpak would be able to see out that contract.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
nelliec 02 January, 2020 21:41
Amla’s contract at Surrey must be longer than one year

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
Grockle 02 January, 2020 21:43
Only a year one at a time. I don't think anyone is sure what the effect of this year's Brexit negotiations will have as no one seems to be sure how far the UK's desires are from what the EU is willing to consider.
