29 Oct 2019 - Hashim Amla: Surrey sign ex-South Africa batsman on Kolpak deal. Surrey have signed former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla on a two-year Kolpak contract.

I was referring to the Philander deal. It will be interesting to see how the UK deals with this issue because it is pretty fundamental to some county squads. Do they give them 12 months or accept deals already done or maintain the programme?

BAZAR is back with us next year, for the blast 28th of May to 3rd of July and two Championship matches during those times.

Signings don`t come much better than that. Babar will be available for the championship just as Matthew Wade is leaving after his seven matches.

Excellent news!

I understand that player costs increased very significantly last season and that said increase played a big role in us making what would have been a net loss ex The World Cup.

It was said, by Sandhills, that we supposedly need to make a certain level of annual profit as part of agreements with creditors of ours. It was, therefore, said that we need to make a surplus of some £200,000 or so, if I remember correctly.

I know that Craig Overton's contract has been taken over by the ECB.... but Messrs Philander, Wade and Babar are on their way. And there will, presumably, be a third official overseas player, to play in CC games 10, 11, 12 13 and 14? (as I understand it, Wade plays 1-7 and Babar 8 and 9).

Even taking into account the Cove situation, I'm not sure that we'll have saved any money at all on the bill for players?

We're not paying Trescothick to bat anymore, it's true, but then he's unlikely to be volunteering in his batting coach role..

Just wondering which expenditure lines we're going to save money on and/or income lines are going to make notably more money next season, than the one just gone?

Or is the idea that those of our players who will be involved in Colin Graves's abomination will not be getting paid by Somerset for the however many weeks that they are away for? Are we going to save a big wodge of cash there?

I think it will be difficult for all clubs this coming season/year, with wage increases and the minimum wage levels rising above inflation, plus the on going increases in general expenses .
It seems the club has in many ways already taken action to minimise expenditure in preparation for what they know will be a challenging year.
As for Player Budgets/Costs for the coming season, I would assume the club will not be responsible for the salaries of Players and Coaches that are not with the club for the period of some City based games that are taking place this year, and also IPL in the case of T.B.

Has the IPL auction already happened?

If not, then I suspect that LG might end up joining TB in it.

AGod,
Tom Banton was signed up for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the December auction for the possible bargain price of £108k, joining your friend Eoin Morgan who went for £560K.

Will be interesting to see who comes up best value.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
AGod 07 January, 2020 20:28
I suspect he'll provide rather better value than E J G Morgan.

Good for us that LG isn't going though.

AGOD, I hate to say it but the 100 is our saviour, the 1.3 mil for the next four years are required to keep the club afloat. Unless of course we can make savings and increase turnover creating a 500K surplus. I have read somewhere and my few brain cells are saying those players in the 100 will compensate 12% of their somerset salary to SCCC.

Off course the accounts may be a little creative, allowing a new CEO to generate instant profit purely by moving a number from one heading to another. The world cup costs are interesting.

I wonder if the Babar influence in Pakistan will open up a lot more marketing opportunities for the club. They are already promoting the t20 shirt with his name on ,and I wonder if they have considered streaming the T20 games to Asia etc...

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
sandhills 08 January, 2020 00:12
The other compensation % is what the club will get for Jason Kerr at Welsh Fire. Loss of 7 players, maybe more and the 1st Eleven Coach.

Is the $1.3 million definitely guaranteed by the ECB ?

I believe it's only for five years, but what happens if the 'you know what' turns out to be an unmitigated disaster ? Is the $1.3 million still guaranteed, or is there small print saying that it's open to review in the event of e.g. 'exceptional unforseen circumstances' ?

(Unforseen by no-one other than the ECB of course).

Just wondering.

Grizzers.

Re: Overseas Player Announcement
sandhills 08 January, 2020 06:38
Im sure there are lots of get outs, however the 1.3 million is essentially drawn from the TV deal. The broadcast monies include Eng Test, One Day & T20 as well as Club Blast, One Day and CC as well as the 100, so unlikely to fail.

Matthew Wade not coming to Somerset due to injury. Seems unlikely he will miss any cricket as a consequence.
