FAKE2020 CC1 Yorkshire "Title Decider"?
Grockle 27 June, 2020 23:23
As far as I can make out the game on Tuesday will have the following certainties,

1. Ali
2.
3. Bartlett
4. Hildreth
5. Abell
6. Davies
7. Gregory
8.
9. RvdM
10. Overton C
11.

Any suggestions/ changes to that assumption?

I've done a little research on Tom Banton and found his first class debut for Somerset was against Surrey on 18th September 2018.

According to a well regarded match writer "He was then caught for a finely and calmly crafted 30..." My memories were more of Burns & Co tonking us around.

A quandary for the selectors now, how many games does he need to play to make an impact? Surely we can't drop such a talent?

Then does he open with Ali? We can bring in Jamie and barely alter the batting line up. Do we also bring in Josh?

OR

Do we leave Tom at 8? Consider Carberry at 2 and bring in 1 more seamer?

OR
Leave it all as it is.

OR
Perm something from the options above?

Are Jack and Dom available for this game.I agree that you can’t drop Banton after one game.

My team for this match would be:

Azhar
Byrom
Bartlett
Hildreth
Abell
Davies
Gregory
Van der Merwe
Craig Overton
Jamie Overton
Jack Brooks

The rationale for that team is this:

The only aim in this match is to win it and secure the fantasy Championship. Nothing else. Teams that win Championships have to be ruthless in their cricket, as at Edgbaston, and ruthless in their team selection. Unless we are presented with a very spicy pitch we need to return to five bowlers. That means losing a batsman.

Banton is, to my mind, the obvious candidate to go. He was selected for Edgbaston for a specific one-off purpose, to fill a temporary seventh batting spot. A spot which, I think, has to go for this match. He did nothing to suggest he should take a top six spot at the expense of anyone currently in a top six which has driven us this close to the fantasy Championship in recent matches. He could have no complaints since his selection was for a one-off situation. Any one of the top six would have a complaint if dropped for Banton, especially for the match in which it is possible the fantasy Championship might be won.

Of the top six, the only one who might be vulnerable is Eddie Byrom, but on performance he has at least as good a case as Banton to the place. He also provides a left/right opening partnership and is one of only two left-handers in the side and so he gets my vote over Banton.

As to the bowlers it must, to my mind, be Jamie Overton who replaces Banton. He was rested for one match only specifically for the purpose of being fresh for the last three matches and there is no reason not to bring him back. In particular we need to have his cutting edge for this match. I have gone for Brooks, ahead of Davey, just, because I think we need to go into this match with an attacking mindset and he has done pretty well in this fantasy league. It was a close-run thing in my mind with Davey because Davey can bowl longish spells and I am conscious that Gregory has played every match but one this season.

Them's my thoughts

Nope both spinners unavailable.

We lost a Blast! Quarter Final at Edgbaston by 6 wickets thanks mostly to Ashton Agar's 4 for 9 in 3.3 overs. All out for 94

I will stick withBanton for Byrom. Not the Somerset way to drop someone after 1 game.If Somerset are preparing this strip they won’t want much turn particularly without Bess and Leach and one assumes Maharaj available.

Re: FAKE2020 CC1 Yorkshire "Title Decider"?
Grockle 28 June, 2020 19:10
My only question would be on Eddie's form. I'm not sure I'd choose Tom Banton though other than because he was picked last match. If I was going to replace Eddie my first choice would be Mike Carberry as an opener.

Other bit of fantasy stuff is that England have got the Ashes having a 3- 1 lead going into the 5th Test.

330 run win Rory Burns MoM 1st Test
7 wicket loss Pat Cummins MoM 2nd Test
151 run win W.Fraine MoM 3rd Test
7 Wicket win Johnny Bairstow MoM 4th Test

Dom played the 1st Test 2 for 44 and 5 for 47
Jack Played in the 3rd Test 4 for 31 and 2 for 30
Only 1 wicket in 4th 1 for 62 (2nd inn) and 25 runs (1st inns)

Bit off-topic I know, but why the hell did England drop Dom after he'd taken a fifer?

Re: FAKE2020 CC1 Yorkshire "Title Decider"?
Grockle 29 June, 2020 21:33
Same reason they gave Bairstow the MoM when Vince scored 127 and Burns the MoM in that first Test. No idea.

Has your computer given up on this Grockle? Can we have Ali and Hildreth to bowl?

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Yorkshire @ Taunton Fantasy beyond Reality?
Grockle 30 June, 2020 15:15
Nothing for the spinner at the moment. We'll have to see how it goes.

Presently.... swimmingly. Though, as you know, it is never really a game until both sides have been to the crease.

Tea arrives without Yorkshire batsmen. They are cleared out for 145 and Somerset are 47 for 0 with Ali on 15 and Tom on 26. Less than 100 behind with 10 wickets in hand.

Perfect day so far up to tea.100 behind with 10 wickets left.

So far so excellent. Now for calm heads and positive batting to the end of the day, preferably by these two. And then the same again tomorrow from everyone else. Did someone not once say, "Opportunity Knocks"? And I would add, "To the calmy determined, the prize."

I promise I have made no changes or interfered with this game in any way.

At the end of Day 1 Somerset are 154 for 0. 9 runs in the lead with Tom Banton on 84 and Azhar Ali on 51.

If I was at this game for real I'd be 'quite' excited about the prospects for the result.

Hamlet had a phrase for it:

"To be or not to be, that is the question."

So let us hope there will be none of his, "Slings and arrow of outrageous fortune," "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow," as Macbeth might have added.

Grockle 30 June, 2020 20:16
Well we bat on into oblivion and then see where we are. Neutralising their first innings score on Day 1 without loss is pretty significant. The maximum bowling points aren't unwelcome either.

(Sm72)

Re: FAKE 2020 CC1 Yorkshire @ Taunton Fantasy beyond Reality?
Grockle 01 July, 2020 13:25
Tom doesn't get to 100, Olivier intervenes at 96. But George takes up the cudgel and keeps hitting Yorkshire with it as he moves past 50. Tom Abell and James Hildreth don't really push on but at Lunch Steve Davies is at the crease looking to build on the 90+ of Birmingham.

Somerset go into lunch at 271 for 4. 126 ahead with 6 wickets in hand.

Keep calm and bat on. We still have tomorrow and tomorrow. Even the steady fall of wickets this morning may signify as much help as hindrence.

Grockle 01 July, 2020 13:56
Well the batting just keeps on coming in this team at the moment.

Steve is on form, Lewis is next and then the Overtons and RvdM can add three figures with Josh at 11!!

it is all looking odds on for at least a draw and some big bonus points
