England vs Pakistan, 2nd Test

Dom Bess is again the only spinner included in the England squad of 14 for tomorrow`s Test at Southampton. Ben Stokes, as already announced, drops out, and Zak Crawley, Mark Wood, Sam Curran and Ollie Robinson are added to those who played at Old Trafford.

As I just posted on the Warwickshire thread .Why can’t they now release Jack to actually play some Red ball cricket.

What an opportunity missed to play Foakes as wicket-keeper! Why are the selectors always so timid and unimaginative?

Because they are petrified that if they actually pick a keeper it may work and then they will have to do it again. If they do that how can they get Johnny and Jos in a side? And the boys in the dressing room may have to get on with someone new. Selection is sooooo delicate isn't it.

"Conservative," is the middle name of each of the selectors, LoL, and it's been that way for a very long time indeed. What this translates into, in practice, is an absolute neuroticism about the possibility of being bowled out for a bad total. Thus the obsession that anybody that isn't a fire-breathing fast bowler *must* be able to bat and bat well or they are, apparently, not worth their place.

The case of Foakes is extra myseterious though, given that he - in fact - *can* bat perfectly well. Indeed, he averages 40 in Tests. Since Jan 2019, Jos averages 26 (and about 34 overall) and Johnny B the princely sum of 18 (I can't be bothered to look up his overall average).

Perhaps Mr Foakes is not one of Root's pals? Not one of the "in-crowd"?

It sure doesn’t fit the perceived bias towards Surrey.

Mr Foakes must wonder what exactly he did to upset the selectors applecart.

So Jack Leach sits another one out in his ball of cotton wool with no plans to use him as anything but as a spare for another 2 to 3 weeks or so!! What a waste of a season.

A complete and total waste. I feel very sorry for Leachy and it's no good for Somerset, either.

Will Jack even go on the winter tours? For somebody with Crohn's, I imagine that somewhere like India is a potential nightmare, with all kinds of possible stomach upsets to aggravate an already inflamed digestive system.

Any fit member of the squad not picked for the team should be paid twice the match fee (debited from Harrison's salary). Simples![s][/s]

Perfect!!! But make it five times Harrison's exorbitant pay packet! And with a contribution to the county deprived of the services of players.
