One of our young players I'd like to see get their first contract.

Even though you’ve never seen him play

But I think there is more chance Blake Cullen will sign a pro contract for Middlesex than Mark Foottit, Ravi Bopara and Lewis Gregory.

I was really pleased to see this. Blake is a product of Wycombe House - the Cricket Club of my youth. The Osterley based Club has certainly punched above its weight over the years with its impressive Colts set up producing a string of cricketers to play at a decent level including Keith Tomlins, Owais Shah, Ben Scott, Jamie Hewitt, Alan Coleman and Gurjit Sandhu. Well done Wycombe House CC!! And congratulations Blake Cullen.

Congratulations to Blake Cullen on being named in England’s squad for the 2020 U-19 World Cup, which will take place in South Africa between 20th January and 9th February.

This month, Cullen was part of England U-19’s squad for a series of 50-over matches against Sri Lanka and hosts West Indies, and he took 8 wickets at an average of 20.75, economy of 3.86 and strike rate of 32.2.

As Luke Hollman also played in that series, he - and no doubt many other people - must have hoped that he would also make the squad for the World Cup, but he hasn’t been included. Maybe it is because the squad includes a spinner who (by U-19 standards) is experienced in Hamidullah Qadri.

Let us hope a bit more patience and less snap judgements are made than with some of his predecessors. England selection a good start. Wycombe House in the heart of The Middle.

Is it just me? His name sounds like it ought to come straight out of one of those sixties' spy caper films. Blake Cullen, licensed to bowl.

It seems Blake Cullen is going to get his first Middle contract.

Gus Fraser on Sky's 'Cricket Debate' (formerly 'The Verdict') which followed the end of play in the test mentioned Blake Cullen 'who is about to sign a rookie contract with us'.

All the England U 19 players profiled here, including BC, who is still a couple of months short of his 18th birthday and is the youngest member of the squad.

Edit to add- took 3-25 in 7 overs in today's warm up match v Afghanistan.

What this demonstrates is that the Academy is our most efficient section. The trick now,, is to ensure that the pathway upward is in better shape than in recent times. If not, and with transfer fees verboten in cricket. Mx will continue to lose out.

First competitive game today, live on Sky Sport Mix (145)

Blake Cullen playing, and being talked up by Andy Flower on commentary.

England bowling first.

BC a bit unlucky as he could have got one of the openers out, but a skied catch was dropped by skipper Balderson (should really have been taken)

Seems quick for 17, and will only get quicker. Was able to vary his pace as well with a decently disguised slower ball.

Nic Pothas is at the ground (not sure if he is part of the coaching team) so I expect he will report back good things.

Always like watching the U19's. As with any group, some will play test cricket, some will become decent county cricketers, and some will sink without trace.

The excitement of starting a career journey and not knowing how far each one of them will get.

This might as well become a general under 19 thread.

Watching India v Japan this morning I'm thinking, 'What's the point?'

How on earth did Japan qualify?

And bad luck on New Zealand, as their match v Japan was rained off, so only one point and no chance to get a massive run rate advantage.

PS- India reached their target of 42 with 45 overs and one ball to spare, and won by 10 wickets.

It was disappointing that England’s hopes of winning the U-19 World Cup ended today after they lost off the last ball to Australia. Then again, Australia spent most of the match on the front foot, as they were 153-2 after 30 overs chasing England’s 252-7, before Australia collapsed to 206-8 after 45.4 overs.

It is not a day that Blake Cullen will look back at with fondness, as after he bowled four overs at the start, he did not bowl again until the death, and although he took two wickets, he conceded 22 off the 48th over and was not trusted to bowl the final over, so only bowled 7 of a possible 10 overs. However, I am sure that he will have plenty of better days in the future.

With the identity (although not necessarily the precise finishing positions) of the two quarter-finalists from each of Groups B and C now known and it looking highly as to who will finish in the top two of Groups A and D, there doesn’t seem much interesting about the remaining group matches.

After their final group match v Nigeria on Saturday, England will nonetheless play three further placement matches as they seek to win the Plate or at least finish as high as possible between 9th and 16th. Of their potential remaining opponents, about the one who ought to pose a challenge to England would be Sri Lanka. England had never previously finished below 8th in this competition, so their will certainly not be pleased about wherever they finish, although being in Group B seemed tougher than being Groups C and D, from which they would have felt more confident of finishing top two. Saturday's match will not be on Sky due to the host broadcaster not having cameras at all of the matches, while I am not sure whether any of their placement matches will be televised.

I spent the afternoon trying to think of a diplomatic way of saying BC didn't have a great match, but with no success. But he was/is the youngest member of the squad and all his overs were bowled in power plays, when runs tend to be more plentiful anyway .

There were some good deliveries in his seven overs, but more a surface for spin than quicks.

As ever in these games the spinners were most effective. Saw 48 th over. Who ever bowled was gonna get tonked. Sully a handy lower order bat for OZ and was modest in his interview.
