As this winter has seen Middlesex lose the services of Dawid Malan, Paul Stirling and George Scott, I anticipate that unestablished players like Tom Lace, Max Holden, Martin Andersson, Robbie White and Jack Davies will feature in our batting line-up in 2020 and that it is hoped that most of those five players will feature prominently for us in the next decade.

Form, fitness and availability permitting, Sam Robson, Nick Gubbins, Stephen Eskinazi and Peter Handscomb will all be expected to feature in our County Championship side in 2020. The amount of places available for other batsmen will depend on factors such as whether any of those four aforementioned batsmen are not in the side and the amount of bowlers we wish to include. The fact that Andersson is an all-rounder will help his chances of finding a way into the side.

It seems that Lace is highly-rated amongst our coaching staff after topping Derbyshire’s Championship batting averages in 2019 with 780 runs @ 43.33 in 10 matches and hitting 51 during his sole Middlesex appearance last season, so it is brilliant that his immediate future will be at Middlesex. Hopefully, he will see a decent amount of 1st XI action in 2020 and go on to be a regular.

I have faith that our strategy of seemingly being happy to give opportunities to players who are currently young instead of signing players from other counties will reap dividends eventually, although we will have to see how soon we are able to get into division one and then mount a challenge for the division one title.

I think Tom should start in the side, in the top four. Robbo and the new skipper also in the top 4. The others can fight for the other places. If Martin Andersson is fit he plays at 6 or 7 for me.

Apart from Hanscomb and probably Robson there is nobody guaranteed a place in the top 6.
Depending on how you look at it there is either healthy competition or a dearth of talent.

It would appear Steve Eskinazi - average 19.19 - is guaranteed a place as we persist with playing him
