2nd XI matches 2020 season

Yorkshire have released their 2nd XI fixtures.

Seems we a re playing them in the 2nd XI championship 11-14 May (venue TBC which probably means it's a home match for us)

It seems all championship games will be 4 days (a rare example of an improvement!) and each county must play a minimum of 6 matches, but no upper limit. Yorkshire seem to have arranged 13 matches- it must be many years since we have played them in the 2's (?) Still, if they are willing to travel to a norf Londin borough for a game of cricket it'll be nice to have them along.

As teams won't play the same number of matches the winner will be decided on percentage of points over the number of matches played.

So counties are responsible for how many fixtures they can fulfil. Hopefully we will be at the high end.

I did hear Yorkshure usually release their 2nds fixtures first and others follow.
Interesting that we are playing the mentioned county.
Counties now responsible for arranging fixtures?
Where did you see that Chunky?

If so,does this show that those complete idiots at ecb crumbling towers are washing their hands of the 2's?
Sounds like turning into a DIY league, sponsored by Homebase?

A poster on WRF Beefy.

But they clearly do have 13 four day fixtures, and it would be unreasonable to expect everyone else to have so many. We have always had 'friendlies' in the middle and towards the end of the season. As there is no need to play the same number of games any more all these 'friendlies' can now count. There might be a restriction that says you can't play the same county more than once, but that seems to be it.

Yorkie fixtures-

Chunky. Or even a west London borough or Hertfordshire.

Surrey have posted their 2nd XI fixtures too on their website.
We play them first up in a home championship match (venue tbc) Apr20-23rd.
Later play them at home again (venue tbc) in a T20 on May 28th
T20 Final is at Arundel on 18th June

Looks like Surrey have nine 2nd XI championship matches then.

An odd development!

Taking a look around various county sites to see if any other club have released their second XI fixtures and it looks like Kent and Sussex will be putting out a combined team, not just for friendlies, but the championship itself (well it says they have a combined match v Hants from 20-23 April, but the following week it is Kent only v Middle 27-30 April, Polo Farm, Canterbury.

Unless it's a mistake it looks like Kent take part in some matches as themselves, others as combined Kent/Sussex and other times as Kent/ Northants!!!!

See if you can make more sense of it than I can!

It looks like we won't be playing Sussex in the championship this year. They just mention T20 v us at Blackstone on 20th May.

Maybe combined championship matches are 'friendlies' for the combined side, but count as points for the team playing solely as themselves?

Chunky. Last year combined Kent games were friendlies. Blackstone. Been there. In the back of beyond down a country lane.

Eleven championship games puts us at the higher end. Kent, for instance. appear to have only seven games (just as themselves)

The lack of a 2nd XI 50 over comp makes me wonder if the firsts will go the same way in a few years. If only the public didn't like it and we hadn't won the World cup. An inconvenience for the ECB.

Seven games at Uxbridge not happy news for Abu's but recompense for no first eleven fixtures. With Malan gone. Not a fan of outgrpunds. Should be happier.

After a further perusal of the fixtures-

No more double headed T20's which means a game every day between 19-21 and 25-28th May, so quite congested at that point. One of the games (Essex at Chelmsford on 27th May) will be floodlit. This is a welcome development. Chances are this will be a first game under floodlights for many of our players and as it's after work and at the county ground may attract a fair number of supporters.

Very little 2nd Xi activity during the blundred. A gap after the finish of a championship match against Worcestershire on 2nd July until 17th August when 4 day game against Hampshire commences of six weeks. During those six weeks just four 50 over friendlies are scheduled. As we won't be too badly inconvenienced by the blundred (Morgan, Simpson, Helm, Sowter) I was hoping more activity could be arranged, but obviously not.

Alan Coleman says 58 days of seconds cricket which he hopes members will support. Said Mx have been pressing for these changes for some time.

Some of it is good (4 day championship cricket) but if we have a squad of 14 for the 'first team' 50 overs competition we might still have two or three paid professionals who get just four days cricket between 2nd July and 17th August (i'm thinking of someone like Joe Cracknell). So do we offer them to Sussex on loan (as they lose eleven players to the blundred). Also those academy players still in full time education will probably be unavailable for some of the April-June matches, then along comes the summer holidays and guess what? No second XI cricket.

Although I don't think the club have made an announcement, reading The Cricketer magazine it seems Dimi Mascarenhas is now our full time bowling coach (not just T20) but will be unavailable during the blundred, as he will be coaching the intruders that have evicted us from Lord's during that time.
