Having not played an ODI since January 2018 or a Twenty20 international since October 2018, Mitchell Marsh has been included in Australia’s squads for series in those formats in South Africa in February and March, so we will have to see whether that will impact the chances of Middlesex signing him. After those series end, Australia will play three ODIs at home to New Zealand and then three T20 internationals away to New Zealand, which will take them to 29th March, before they return to action when they play limited-overs matches away to Scotland and England, beginning on 29th June.

If Marsh remains in Australia’s plans for the coming months, then Cricket Australia may either make him unavailable to play in the T20 Blast, or they may say that he can only play up to the week before 29th June, which in Middlesex’s case would mean he could only play up to our 9th group match on 21st June.

If we are seeking a batsman or all-rounder who is not in Australia’s limited-overs plans, then I am sure that there are many other alternatives, including Marcus Stoinis, as he is neither included in the squad to tour South Africa nor signed by a county for next season.
