Johnson's decision brings to an end 22 years on the playing staff, during which time he scored more than 20,000 first-class as well as 10,000 in the limited-overs game.

The 37-year-old said: "I've decided it's time to call it a day and would like to take the opportunity to thank the club for 22 great years that I would not exchange for anything.

"I've managed to win every domestic honour with Notts and that's something a lot of players better than myself have not been lucky enough to achieve. I just hope I can go out on a real high by helping Notts to gain promotion to Division One of the County Championship this season."

Cricket manager Mick Newell added: "Johno has been a fantastic performer for Notts and remains the most popular player at Trent Bridge since Derek Randall. It's a sad day for cricket when someone of his calibre decides he will not play again."
