| After finally bowling
Northants out for 420, Notts' second innings got off to a terrible start,
Guy Welton departing first ball, bowled by Darren Cousins. Jason Gallian
departed soon after for two, edging Carl Greenidge to Mike Hussey at second
slip but Paul Johnson claimed a 50 in guiding his side to 88 for two at
tea.
Usman Afzaal, 34 not
out at the interval, did not add to his score before departing soon after
the break caught by wicket-keeper Tobin Bailey off Brown. Johnson soon
followed, caught at mid-off by Greenidge trying to hit Swann over the
top for 70 and three balls later Balal Shafayat also departed, caught
at bat pad by Tony Penberthy off Brown for nought.
Nicky Boje (18) then
played all round a straight one from Swann and when Chris Read was caught
at silly mid-on by Adrian Rollins off Brown for six, Nottinghamshire had
slumped to 133 for seven. As the close approached, Paul Franks became
Swann's third victim, Adrian Rollins snaffling another catch at silly
mid-on.
Northants began the
day at 248 for two but lost Mal Loye early on when he was run out backing
up without adding to his overnight 105. Two balls later Jeff Cook was
leg before to Boje for nought and Boje then took a slip catch which dismissed
Tony Penberthy for two off Logan.
Swann quickly became
Logan's third victim, Shafayat taking a smart catch at point before Bailey
edged Andy Harris to wicketkeeper Read for eight. That
prompted David Sales to get a move on and he brought up his century after
racing towards three figures with a series of boundaries. But
at the other end Boje removed Greenidge lbw for seven before Darren Cousins
finally provided some steadiness at the other end, allowing Sales to play
around him.
The tail-ender took
nearly an hour to accumulate his 13 before being dismissed just after
lunch, Boje taking another catch in the slips off Harris. With last man
Brown joining him, Sales began to throw the bat at everything, taking
18 off the next over from Franks to move past 150.
The assault continued,
with both Franks and Boje disappearing into the stands for six, before
Logan came back to finally end Sales' innings on 179, Johnson taking the
catch in the deep.
