Hussain preferred to focus on the Durham pace bowler's performance aside from his 16 wides.

Harmison did have an excuse. He suffered concussion when diving to stop a ball on the boundary in the third over.

Hussain said: "I'm sure there'll be a lot attention on Harmison's wides, but the way he bowled inbetween those wides was very pleasing for Test match cricket. He did ruffle a few batsmen up.

"I just told him not to worry about things like that. He was getting called for a wide because we were playing one-day rules and I was trying to tell him that some of those deliveries are the sort of balls we'll be needing in three weeks time in the Test match and that's the sort of cricket we're looking for.

"I was trying to keep him optimistic. The wide situation doesn't bother me other than I don't want our young bowler becoming too downbeat because it's a harsh environment out there."

However, Hussain was not so happy with the team's overall display.

"I don't like to lose any game and I'd be disappointed if any of our team or 13 weren't hurt that we lost a game," said Hussain.

"England shouldn't lose any game in any circumstances to a non-international side.

Hussain also warned that England's walking wounded must make a return to action soon if England are to have a successful Ashes tour.

"People have to get out there and play - that's why they are on this tour," stressed Hussain.

"The only exception is Darren Gough because he's had a long-term injury and he's got to be handled with real care because he's a real asset to us, but even he will have to get out there now and play.

"That's what everybody's here for, all the batters and all the bowlers, and sooner or later they're going to have to get out there and either be fit to play for England or not fit to play for England - there's no hiding place on an Ashes tour."
